Deryck
I'm looking to get a new scientific calculator for A-level studies (including maths and physics) and since there are vaired people in this forum, I thought this is a good place to ask. For the UK market. :)
enigma-penguin Veteran Posted December 7, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 7, 2003 buy yourself a ti calculator a ti83+ or something.. graphics are great for most science and math based subjects.. if you learn to code
z3r0n3
TI-89. i bought one in the 8th grade and it has never failed me once. i'm now a junior in highschool and i still use it everyday. It is invalueable in physics, chemistry, and algebra. I almost don't need paper anymore. everyone else with their TI-83's are working half the things on paper while i just punch the whole problem in and bam, solved. BTW, stress the word almost. :)

dduardo
If you want a new scientific calculator then I would get the HP 33s. It has a two line display and is programmable (The only scientifiic calculator that I know of that is programmable). If you want a new graphing calculator then I would get the HP 49+. It has a 75Mhz processor with usb and IR. A Ti89 version 2 only has a 12Mhz processor.
Deryck
Thanks for the suggesstions but I have to have scientific becuase graphic claculators are not allowed in my exams.
Hypercube
Scientific greatly limits your choices. There is little difference between the realm of scientifics; see a higher end hp or ti.
cesardrgn
then a TI-83 or TI-83+ is what you are looking for...

Deryck
Hmmm...HP...RPN (Reverse Polish Notation)? Got to get used to that. The HP 33s does not come out until Janurary and since it's programmable, can I take it into the exam?
Fyska
probably not... you'd have to check. i got a 83+SE, didn't check if that could be used. Thankfully it can. it's pretty >_<

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted December 7, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 7, 2003 For non-graphing, I have a TI-30X IIS, that's worked very well for me.

Daem0hn
i have a ti83+ it is the best calculator that is approved by the TEE (tertiary entrance exam) board people, so thats what i have however, the best calculator if you are allowed one is the ti89, can solve pretty much any problem you give it, great calculator :D
isus
i like the clear version of the ti-83+... it comes with loads more memory than normal, which means more games and math utilities!

Fusion
If you want a new scientific calculator then I would get the HP 33s. It has a two line display and is programmable (The only scientifiic calculator that I know of that is programmable). If you want a new graphing calculator then I would get the HP 49+. It has a 75Mhz processor with usb and IR. A Ti89 version 2 only has a 12Mhz processor. Ti Calcs are programmable also. I would reccomend the ti86, it's what I used in high school, but I don't believe they make them anymore. The 89 is the best option. Stay away from the 83, you might as well get a 10 dollar cheapo if you are looking at that.
bradford108
Get a TI-89 and then learn the "text" mode of the graphing function... :D I'ts great for all of those pages of exam notes I've stored....
poind
I really loved my TI83+ when I was using it a lot (once I figured it out, more-or-less), but does sound like the more recent TI-89 is something to look into at the least. Haven't been able to compare it personally, myself.
