50 Person Lan

Recommended Posts

Well i have access to a building to have a lan party, and i want to have a big one, it can hold up to about 50 people. Its in san antonio texas, but im not sure how many people from SA are on these boards, but i have to see. If ne one is interested let me know. It will probably be on the 21st of December. $15, there will be CS, UT2k3, COD, BF1942, and so on. you bring everything you need, and if you can spare a swtich or router that would be great.

One thing I really would recommend is not using other peoples switches and routers for LAN parties. They'll give you no end of problems. You should manage the networking side of it - 5 12 port switches and 3 or so Linux boxen can handle pretty much all of it... use 1 linux box for routing and maybe an FTP server for people to grab the latest patches and the other 2 for hosting dedicated servers for CS and BF1942 (or whatever games you think will be most popular)...

If you don't want to wire the place up, you could put some 802.11g wireless access points up and hire out USB 802.11g adapters. 802.11g should be fast enough for gaming as long as you have enough APs (you can get 150mbit network speed if you set 3 APs to a different channel each and link em to the same network), however I think you'll probably be using ethernet :).

Here is what i think im gonna do. I have a cisco gigabit switch that we are not using at work, and im gonna borrow that, and i already have 3 boxes extra for that routing and game server stuff.the servers are on teh gigabit so ill have them on the cisco switch, and my 2k3 box will be my dhcp server and ftp. the other two will be game servers. but i will need extra switches, that is why i have asked people to bring theirs.

Where exactly at ?

Edit: Let me also say that I'm not a big fan of having these types of things near the holidays, I had an Xbox LAN Party on October 11, 2003 and we had such a good time that we all wanted to do it again sooner however we did not want to do it around the holidays, because there are enough things to have to worry about so we decided to have in in early January.

Also I will say I do live in San Antonio however as of late I've gone from being a PC gamer to a console gamer, specifically Xbox and I can tell you an Xbox LAN party is a lot easier to do than a PC LAN party.

I think the 21st is a great time to have a lan party. Last year I held one on Dec. 21st and had 50 people. This year I am having one on Dec 27 and have 42 people signed up. Check it out here:

Anyway if you need any help or advice let me know.

As far as the network, you don't really need a router at all (unless you have a internet connection). I would leave that out. If you need a few more swtiches, dells switches are pretty good for a fair price.

They have a 24 Port with 1 Gigabit for $179.

I agree with aldo, never rely on otheres to bring equipment. Its often forgotten or does not work.

Good luck, I would come, but 2000 miles is a bit far for me to travel for a lan party!

It going to be near ingram mall, or if there is less than 20 people it wil be at a cyber cafe.

My brother lives near Ingram, I live near Fiesta Texas...

Anyhow I'm sure you can get people if you put it out on places like [H]ardOCP, there seem to be a lot of Texans there and GenMay and other similarly sized places, maybe even make a website if you plan to do it often.

I'll consider going but it helps to know exactly where and when.

what's the fun of going to a LAN cafe with strangers? it's so much more fun if you play with a community you know of. otherwise, why not just play strangers over the internet?
