taosd
Hey all, I am in the market for a new TV and I have narrowed it down to two models. I am torn between the Sony Wega KV27FS100 and the JVC L'Art AV-27FA44. Both are 27" and both look like they would be good for the money I will be paying. I am going to be using them primarily for Game playing, but also TV watching and Movie watching. The sony site boasts these features: ? FD Trinitron? flat picture tube for a convincing picture corner to corner ? Image integrity preserved with a 3-Line Digital Comb Filter ? Convenient Component Video Input ? Side Speaker Design (10W x 2) and the JVC site boasts these features: ? Real Flat CRT with INVAR Shadow Mask ? 3-Line Digital Comb Filter ? Component Video Input ? Audio Output 7.5 Watts x 2 Speakers ? 3 AV Inputs (1 Front, 2 Rear) ? Illuminated Super Command Universal remote w/DVD Control Capability And a local store has these pages for them, with some information: Sony Wega JVC L'Art I do like the idea of an illuminated remote control, but is that enough to sell me on a TV? I think not. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Homer
Get the JVC, its Widescreen.
taosd
Get the JVC, its Widescreen. the JVC has a 4:3 aspect ratio just as the Wega does... so... its not wide screen, is it?
+StevoFC MVC Posted December 7, 2003 MVC Share Posted December 7, 2003 i have the 27 inch sony and a 24 inch. i like them a lot. look good, especially for the price.
isus
i like sony equipment... while they are expensive, they are virtually indestructible.
BMac
I have also thought that Sony has the best quality TV's. They tend to have a wider integration with other units. (ie small brand dvd players our stereo tuners) That's my thought is go with the sony. Also under DBX Stereo the Sony has MTS which will provide better sound without surrond sound. As for the illuminated controller you can get one of those separate and cheap if you really desire it.
Cowpie
Psh, I am a lil disappointed by this thread, you need help buying a 27 inch? HA It should be a rule that you cant start this thread ever again unless the tv is atleast....46 inches or so....
Marc A.
Get this one, I did. Or get the Sony, it'll last longer then the JVC.
Betelgeuse
I would go for the JVC (Y)
mm_omega2
got a 36" sony wega..... and a smaller JVC...... but if you want to go with quality and dependability and better looks, .... just get the Sony..... you'll be happier.
taosd
I would go for the JVC (Y) why would you go for the JVC though? i'm not saying its bad, i am just curious as to your reasoning
Betelgeuse
i like sony equipment... while they are expensive, they are virtually indestructible. I agree Sony TV's are good but I wouldn't say indestructable.. I had a 51" Sony WEGA and the flaming thing failed 6 months after the warranty expired, the tube went! (N) I think they've been getting progressively worse since being "Made in China". :/

Yvo
Actually according to ConsumerReports' Sony has one of the HIGHEST repair rates per tv. Not because they sell more but their tvs just have more issues. JVC, on the other hand, has hardly any repairs and if repairs were made, they were cheap. I would go JVC if I were you. Tiger.Girl
i also had bad luck with my 36" sony wega going bad after 3 months or so i would go with the JVC

Very interesting, just confirms what I feared - Sony = Expensive Yuppie Brand (TV's anyway).
notchbak
i have a 27" JVC tv that is 10 years old. its got 800 horizontal lines of resolution that are still to this day crystal clear. having been a home theater installer for over 13 years i can honestly tell you that Sony makes a very nice product, and alot of times is a pioneer when it comes to all the new bells and whistles. but many other companies tend to be the ones who perfect these things soon after they are introduced. JVC is an excellent product and if you shop around youll find that you can get more for your money with a JVC product, or save money on a comparable item to Sony. either way in my opinion you win with JVC. im a proud owner of a 50" Samsung DLP 16x9 HDTV. hands down it beats out plasma any day of the week. The Prodigal Father
i have that EXACT Sony, and I also bought it from Futureshop and I'm getting along great with it. No problems yet, although I've only had it for about 4 months. I've had JVC's before and I liked them, but Sony is just.......you know. Go for The SONY. poind
Sony Trinitron sets do have some *great* images, but for the money, I consistently find myself using JVC and rec'ing it to others when they ask. Just helped a relative a ton getting the 32" JVC version of what you reference after a ton of research, and recently ended up doing the 14" version for my own limited use. (Relatives/friends use JVC otherwise everywhere else.) I might go compare the two side-by-side in a shop, but otherwise I'd expect the $$$ savings markedly in favor of the JVC. (If you're hooking up DVD and stuff, compare their capabilities as well.) If you have such things available, you *may* even want to check sources like Sears and Wal-Mart for your TV. They can indeed have some of the best prices going and carry such products. Personally, as much as I like Sony televisions overall, I do end up swearing by JVC when cost savings and other stuff are also factored in. I *really* like their TV's (and stereos and VCRs).... AQUaDeX
Well people buy Sony for the brand and their effort to innovate and research, honestly flat screen TVs are sort of old technology there's no real need of buying a Sony, so my advice would be get a higher end JVC rather than the Sony. (and with this I suppose the Sony costs more)
CrimsonBlur
I like JVC, their price/performance proportion is right on target. Does the Sony have component inputs? My JVC TV does, it isn't HDTV or anything, but it still makes a huge difference in picture quality when you pay attention to fine lines and color accuracy and bleed. The thing I don't like about Trinitron techology in general is that there are noticable spaces between the lines of resolution. This is most aparent on older sets that have a lower number of lines. I can even see it in many Trinitron-based monitors, but it isn't nearly as noticable as it is with the TV sets. You can barely notice on my JVC, definately don't notice it as much as the Trinitrons. I don't see why everyone talks up Sony's technology so much, it isn't actually the best, in my opinion. Neither is JVC, but when you compare the prices, I think JVC is much better for what you pay for.
taosd
I have heard that the WEGA is the only one which offers 100% flat screen. I have heard that the JVC does bulge out. Is there any truth to this, and if so, what effects is that going to have on the image quality?

Is there any truth to this, and if so, what effects is that going to have on the image quality? A truely flat screen doesn't really do a whole lot. All a flat screen does is reduce ambient glare from objects not directly within the line of sight between you and the screen (and things behind you). Also, you have no line distortion, vertical lines are truely 100% straight across the entire screen, and same with horizontal lines, this is almost impossible with a courved screen. But really... it isn't going to make a huge visual difference in day-to-day use.
mthibadeau
I went through the the exact thing last week. Exactly the two sets you are trying to decide on. I went with the JVC for several reasons. I prefer the sharper invar shadow mask tube, always have. There is also the option to run the tube on normal or Hot settings, with three different settings: Standard, theater, and gameing. The Sony's have always appeared a bit washed out by comparision, to me anyway. The sound system on the JVC is far superior to the sony in terms of quality. JVC has a cheper set that doesn't have the improved sound system if you want to save a few bucks. I also confirmed with the sales rep something I'd read in a review: The Sony case is a bit flimsy with regard to the base. They do crack as the tv is very heavy and should be handled very carefully. The JVC also has 16:9 compression for normal tv viewing as well as DVD playback, the Sony is only during DVD playback. As to the illuminated remote on the JVC, unfortunately it only lights the volume and channel buttons so it's not alot of help in the dark. This is not a problem for me as I have a much nicer universal remote. Hope this helps some.
