Buying a new TV

Recommended Posts

as it stands I am leaning towards the JVC... I have a few days to think about it, so maybe someone can sway my decision before then... more comments are welcome!

the JVC has a 4:3 aspect ratio just as the Wega does... so... its not wide screen, is it?

no it isnt....

also get sony, ive never had anything of theirs die, and i love their return policy, ive never had anything jvc so i have no idea :/

why dont you goto a local store and look at them both?

also nothing is better then the trinitron tube, the diamondmax are close, but its w/e you want or will notice , if you have a tight budget get jvc so you can buy other x-mas presents, sony are more expensive but i think its well worth it.

I work in the home theater at best buy. The 2 TV's are very close to each other in terms of quality. However, that said, WEGA TV's are amazing and I think you should get the Sony.

Personally I would go for the JVC, purely out of personal experiences. I have owned both a Sony TV (Which crapped out just outside of the manufacturers warranty, something which I am lead to believe happens a lot), and currently have a WS 28'' JVC which hasnt caused me any problems what-so-ever.

At the end of the day though, what you are best doing is seeing if you can find anywhere local that has both models, or at very similar models in stock so that you can test for yourself, after all what is one mans dream TV, is another mans crud.

sounds like a well researched decision to go with jvc

if you went down to a local business and they would let you compare the two side by side with about the same settings you wouldnt notice much of a difference in picture

if for any strange reason you do decide to go with the sony make absolutely sure you get an extended warranty on the thing you dont want to go through the same hell as many other wega owners have through including me

Well I'm a pure videophile and at least when it comes to HDTV sets Sony is the worst brand you can buy. They overcharge on all of their products and they use the worst quality parts for the price in this class. The only things I like that are Sony products are their MiniDisc recorders and their 400 disc mega changers. I own one Toshiba HDTV set as well as a Samsung DLP set which I just bought last month. I've never even looked at Sony products. Also I'm not anti Sony but when it comes to TV sets you are getting less quality parts and paying a higher price compared to other brands such as Sammy, Panny, Philips and even RCA sets. This goes even more with HDTV sets. Now you won't see much difference with a smaller screen but it might be worthwhile for you to look at the Samsung 30" widescreen HDTV set also at futureshop under 34" and smaller section. This set might be a little much for 1300.00 but if you can find a US shopping site that can export to Canada you might be able to pick this up for less. But I haven't look in a while.

But if you don't go the HDTV way just don't buy the Sony set. You would be better off getting the JVC since they make very good products and would be a good buy versus the sony being a bad buy. If you go onto AVSforums and ask anyone about buying a Sony HDTV set you will get flamed very bad where asking about pretty much any other brand and you will most likely get help or get suggestions but not with with a sony question.

I am looking to spend about $500 on a TV (give or take) so i have that money set aside to buy it. and I have a playstation 2 that has died, and its a sony product, so i don't know... hmmm... still looking promising for the JVC...

the main problem is I have wanted a WEGA for a long time, I have always heard they are great, but I wanted some outside opinions... I am torn! :D

keep those responses coming!

You guys bashing Sony have bad experiences for a reason. Stores offer extended warranties for a reason. Not just to make money, but also to cover crap like that. Sony TV's are the best. Whether it ge a 27' WEGA or the 60" Grand WEGA LCD Projection, their picture quality is second to none. The only company I've seen compare to them are Toshiba.

but if the product is continually failing i don't want to have the problem of carrying a 100 lb TV into the store to get fixed all the time. I don't want a cheaply made TV that I have to pay top dollar for... I want something that will last. The TV I have now is a 20" Sharp television that I have had for 10 years and it works fine, but I am replacing it becuase it doesn't show enough of the picture...

I have had a 34" Sony for many years now, and it worked completely fine until last year when I started getting an image on only half the screen, and the problem was easily fixed by an electrician. At about the same time, my friend's TV (forgot which brand) had the same problem. So it's probably not just Sony. I agree that Sony has the best quality tube for normal TV (but not plasma, they're terrible). Definitely get the Sony.

the consumer shouldnt have to be force fed into buying an extended warranty just because there is statistically a higher chance of something going wrong with the product

sony knows its true and thats why they hardly back there products and give such crappy warrantees

you get an extended warranty? thats great but now if something goes wrong the repairman will have to come over find out whats wrong with it then mail order some crappy $5 part in from japan come back try to fix it and you cant use your tv for a good month or more :pinch:

If you get the right warranty, like from the place where I work, best buy, you don't have to wait a month. It gets fixed or replaced as fast as possible. If they can't fix it in store (or in home for TV's 27" and higher), they don't bother wasting time ordering parts and all, they simply give you a new one.

You are never force fed the warranty, but it ****es me off when people bitch about a problem and how they are screwed because they have to buy a new one. Most manufacturers only offer 1 year parts, 90 days labor. If you seriously think that is enough coverage for a TV, you need a wake up call.

Well, I can get the JVC for $491 canadian (i'm not sure if that includes tax or not) and I didn't get a price on the WEGA... I have to buy a new wall unit if i get a new TV so i guess i will be going with the JVC... I was told by the district manager of a calgary retailer that that was the best buy. Thank you all for your help!

i agree that it isnt long enough coverage but when a company can backup a product with a year of parts and labor compared to sony it says something for the quality of the product

most people i know who have problems with there TVs are either under a year old or nearing the end of its life cycle

i do have an extended warranty on my tv and wouldnt go without when spending that much money on something

Alright, so I went into the store yesterday and carefully examined both TVs... I noticed that the JVC has slightly rounded corners (most likely as a result of its non-pure-flatscreen) and the Sony had a bleeding edge... The difference between the two TV's is only about $30 and I am again confused on which TV to buy. I have read reviews of both TV's and they both seem very good. Anyone have an earth-shattering reviews or comments that might help again sway my decision? thanks!
