Travelling to Rome. NEED ADVICE!

Recommended Posts

My two friends and I are planning on going to Rome spring break, and we're trying to plan everything out, especially monetary issues.

We're trying to figure out how Roman prices relate to American prices. For instance, if you go to a decent American restaurant, you'd spend around $40-$50 per person if you're in a city. How much (in american dollars) would one expect to pay at a decent Roman restaurant? Ideally, we'd like to figure out about how much we'd spend per person per day in Rome, doing the basic sightseeing stuff (and a bit of extra exploring).

If you have experiences, please let us know. It'll help us out a lot.

Rome is the bomb.com There's a great hostel that's sorta out of the way (out of the way = about 15 mins walk from the vatican), its right next to the old olympic park of theirs. (btw, when i was there this summer, coldplay played in the staduim that was right out back of the hostel, like i was sitting in the back garden and could hear them. i could've gone. too bad i wasn't a fan back then). I guess the resturants are cheap enough. I think i ate mcdonalds or something (yeah, i know, i suck). anyway, i was there for like 3-4 days. its good that you're going with a friend. definatly see the spanish steps, the trivalli fountain, the forum, the collesium, the vatican. just get lost for a bit. i did. was a bit of a b*itch though, as it was at least 85 degrees outside and i was wearing a backpack. but yeah, so my hostel was just like 18 euro a night, and that included free breakfast. but they served lunch and dinner there for pretty cheap. you should look into the catacombs. i didn't, but they might be intresting. and try to see as much of the city as you can, not just the areas i mentioned. (next time i'm going to follow my advice better). take a sh*tload of pictures. take pictures of things you don't think matter. just random pictures. but then don't forget to take pretty pictures. i didn't take enough pictures. i just wish i had taken pictures of random streets or where i ate dinner or this random square/piazza, etc. by "Roman prices" maybe you mean euros? euro's are a bit higher than dollars. over the summer it was like 1 euro = $1.17, i think its goen down a bit. the city isn't that hard to get to know. buy a rome exclusive travel guide by like Lets Go or something. taht should help. the subway is really easy to get around on. the busses = free for you to use as you like. you're supposed to buy a ticket or something...but don't worry about it. i suppose the traffic cops or whatever could get you, but then just start talking in english and get off as soon as possible. but you could do it for like $40-50 for sure. 18 euro for loding. 15-20 for food 10 for sights (depending on how many you see. the vatican was like 7.50, the coliseum was maybe 4, maybe more. i think the forum was included on that). make sure you get some gelato. i'm not sure what the weather is like in march. probably a bit cooler. i was never worried about my safety. get an italian-english dictionary. just be alert for pickpockets, but i never felt like there was one near me ever, but then, maybe they were, but they didn't have a chance to steal anything. i didn't really try the nightlife as my hostel was out of the way for those sorts of things, i was by myself and the hostel had a midnight curfew. but there is lots of fun to be had there, so i've heard. check it out.

i went there with my gf, all you gotta take care of to buy stuff i na local supermarket (like water/lemonade) so you have something for the day...anyway....regarding food/eating...try to look for smaller restaurants a litle aside from those big sightseeing attractions. i went to a suberb tavera and got a salad, spaghetti carbonara and a beer for like $10.

i watched 20/20 once. they had a special about Rome

they said it's the capital of thefts in the world.. and they showed videos some really tricky ******s

there are a group of girls and they only go after people who have those ummm. i forgot what it's called.. it's like a little bag you put around your waist. anyway.. there are about 4 of them and one carries a piece of cardboard. they come up to you and start singing. while you stand there listening, they put the cardboard with some nice little happy messages on it. up against your stomache taking your attention away from your little bag. while one of the girl reaches and unzips the bag and takes your stuff.

another one.. they have these street venders.. and they'll show you a really nice camera.. at an unbelievable price. and you buy one. and the seller says. thank you very much, let me gift wrap it for you. while he pretends to gift wrap it. he already has one that is giftwraped but it's either a broken camera or some other cheap thing.

and the subways are bad too..

so yea. keep your valuables in your front shirt pocket or.. other than that i think rome is a nice place. even though i was only there for 45 mins (flight transfer)
