Looking for a 128gb ssd

Recommended Posts

Mindovermaster hit the nail on the head with the Samsung 840 pro.  I have yet to find another SSD with a 5 year warranty, such low power usage while being the fastest drive you can buy in a SATA flavor.

That's a good SSD, but quite expensive; the Crucial MX100 right now is one of the best in price/quality ratio.

Yes and no. It's a great price ratio, but that is it. BTW, he's in Canada, not Europe.

Sure, the MX100 is dirt cheap, but the 840 has been out a loooong time. Quality over price, take your pick.

I think he means a 2.5".

You are probably right, but the laptop has both slots.  Hence the question to the OP, as he is the one who really knows what he wants.

That's a really good point, and I didn't know that. The laptop is my wife's, and I think having an msata and hdd (for storage) would be more convenient for her.

Now its msata vs an ssd. :p

Are there any msata drives that can match the speed and quality of the 840 evo?  Serious question.

There is an 840 EVO mSATA, I bought the 500GB variant a few weeks back and am so far very happy with it.

They are theoretically slower than their 2.5" variants, but I can't tell.

Ok. i can look at an mSATA and compare prices with the ssd. Really, a 64gb or a 120gb msata + current 500gb hdd is the best combination imho.

I have M.2 SATA in my T440s but would have gotten the Samsung 840 EVO as that's more than good enough if you ask me. 20-75MB more read/write speed won't make a single difference.

well, for what i've been seeing most people can't tell the difference (speed wise) if the SSD is a Samsung Pro or a Crucial m500 or a OCZ vector or whatever. Since the SATAIII will limit the SSD anyways, it wont make such a difference buying a cheaper one, right? As long as it is reliable and has a good warranty...

Best bang for buck by far right now is the Crucial MX100. If you want absolute top speeds at a (sometimes much) higher price, look at the Samsung 840 series. Everything else is sort of irrelevant.

With the greatest respect, the MX100 has barely been out for a month.  Whilst it represents fantastic GB/$ value, it has hardly established itself as a reliable drive, unlike the Samsung.

I am a big fan of Crucial drives with the majority of drives in my systems being M4's.  I have had a Samsung 830 for a while now which has been fantastically reliable too.

Crucial has a spotless track record when it comes to reliability. The MX100 isn't really new tech, it's a controller they used before and the NAND isn't really new either but just made with a new process. As long as they keep using the quality Marvell controllers and their own good NAND (from IMFT, Intel-Micron joint venture) I'll continue my blind trust.
