Looking for a 128gb ssd

Recommended Posts

I have 3 SandForce ssds and all 3 of them work perfectly.

vertex 2 extended

vertex 3

Mushkin chronos

But all of them use the lastest firmware.

More than likely it would be fine.  I never had an issue with any of the Vertex 2 and 3 drives that I had in the past.  But we still can't look past the fact that there have been a lot of failures due to the Sandforce controllers.

It's an old technology, slower, and isn't much cheaper than the newer stuff, so there's really no reason to go with it.

Of course that's why i recommended updating the firmware. From my own past exp Kingston is a good company and an updated firmware resolving the potential issues this drive might had in the past is probably avalaible. The SSDNow v300 is kinda old.

I'm not sure it is worth spending too much money on a 120GB SSD and the op said he was looking for a cheap one. 5 years from now 120GB will be nothing and the price of ssds will continue to go down. It's not like he is buying that for 10 years.

Now if he was spending 300$ on a 480GB ssd for a server getting one that is better would surely be worth it.

Are SanDisk SSDs any good? You know, for those on a budget?

They're probably fine.  Thought you might as well save up the little bit extra and get the 256GB MX100 for ~$100.  Obviously more capacity and it will perform better.

The firmware update is essentially a band-aide and just masks the problem.  The risk is still there for failure, just not as high as before.

If he's in the market to buy one, there's absolutely no reason to get one with a Sandforce controller.  I can buy a Pentium 4 CPU for cheap, but there are a ton of reasons why not to. :P

But with OCZ being sold to Toshiba, they're in kind of a limbo right now, so might as well steer clear of them until they start getting back into the game.

funny i would think the opposite, since Toshiba (in storage) as a better reputation then OCZ. Also OCZ dumped Sandforce with the Vertex 4, that?s why those drives are much better and more reliable (Marvell controller). Unfortunately the damage was done.

I wasn't referring to that.  Sure a firmware update helps, but it doesn't fix crappy hardware.

I just suggested to not go with anything Sandforce altogether.  There are plenty of cheap and more reliable options out there.

fair enough.

Getting off-topic guys :p.

Let's stay on the getting a good quality 128GB SSD for cheap!

heh heh then my first comment pretty much closes the thread; after that it just went offtopic.

If you want cheap and reliable, get a Crucial MX100. The M500 is also fine but slightly slower and around the same price anyway. Avoid the 120/128GB versions, they're quite a bit slower. The 256GB MX100 is incredibly good value and sells for about the same price other brands sell 128GB for.

If you want to pay a bit more for a bit more performance (but the difference is small and for regular usage absolutely not worth it), go with a Samsung 840 EVO.

Anything else will either be more expensive, slower, or lower quality (usually all three). Crucial and Samsung are one of the few companies that still make their own NAND, which is why they're able to deilver quality at low prices. Crucial = Micron = IMFT NAND. And IMFT = Intel and Micron joint venture. Kickass stuff.

That's a good SSD, but quite expensive; the Crucial MX100 right now is one of the best in price/quality ratio.

the Samsungs are a nice device but these Crucial devices are very well made and well received with a very nice price point. about $80 for the 120gb.

Good choice on the Crucial. All the latest reviews are excellent. I'm planning on buying a few of these for hosting VM's off Windows 8.1 Hyper-V on external enclosures. SQL runs like a champ on an SSD. :)
