drosje
Someone told me that they were able to logon using only their voice under OS X. Does anyone know if this is really possible?
danbalsh
Not sure, I've never seen any program that would allow you to do this. I know it used to be in OS9 though.
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted December 8, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 8, 2003 I dunno about login, but there is built-in speech recognition in OSX. It's under System Prefernces > Speech

the evn show
Using voice to login is a pretty crumby idea if you don't couple it with something else like biometric, password, or dongle. The way speech recognition works in os x now it's supposed to recognize any voice - it doesn't analyze the characteristics of the speaker to determin who is talking, it's just plain old speech -> text conversion. Imagine walking up to your computer, clicking on your name, clearing your throat, saying you're password in a nice loud voice, and then typing it in: that's what you'd be doing. Even if it did do voice analysis, it's trivial for someone to record your voice and render all security moot (no matter how good it looks in the movies). aristotle-dude
The voice logon in OS 9 used the phrase "my voice is my password" and the system analyzed the characteristics of the speaker so someone else could not just speak "my voice is my password" to gain access. I hope they add something like this to OS X eventually or Apple allows for a third-party developer to create a plugin for the authentication system. If they allowed for a custom phrase in addition to analyzing the characteristics, it would be difficult to crack unless someone recorded the exact phrase. Zerosignull
in mac os nine it was a voice print password and wasnt related to the speach recognition software. All mac's since, at least, os 8.1 have had text-> speach and vice versa. If u dont mind fealing like a bit of a ###### then getting a mic and telliong ure computer do do stuff or asking ti queries like "whats the time" is prity cool. Remember the whole mac interface is speakable so when dialoge boxes come up yopu can say "ok" or "cancel" or what iother options there is on there. A good trick is to turn on speakable itmes in os nine then when someone is using IE to surf juist shout the word "quit" ;) I find it ****es of peoiple more after they have spent ages filling in a form
drosje
Haha! How cruel... but funny. Too bad they didn't keep the voice print in OS X. But then again, it is an entire new OS.
NeoMayhem
VoicePrint in OS 9 was sweet, it worked really well :p I got my brother to try to crack it, but he couldn't, and he is good at imitating voices :p
