Math Teacher

Recommended Posts

Okay so i have this crazy math teacher. She teaches geometry and now wants us to make songs about geometry that she will force us to carol around my school during christmas time. :( (who said high school was fun?)

Anyway, i need help creating such song. I already made a little of it, its to the tune of "Let it Snow." Please help, my teacher will rape each and every one of us if its not good. :pinch:

songs about geometry huh?... ...yeah, your teacher's on drugs...

And how are you supposed to make your own X-mas geometry songs? She must be out of her mind!

First of all...ignore everyone telling you to complain to your parents, principal, etc. Just do the assignment. The logic behind the assignment is that geometry is based on theorems - hence a lot of it is memorization. It has been proven that the human brain remembers music fairly well - and that is why she is pushing you to do the assignment. It WILL make it easier to remember such wonderful things as complimentary and supplementary angles.

Not trying to be a jerk, but I blew off geometry when I went through it years ago. It made physics, chemistry, and advanced mathematics a lot harder later on.

Now, I'll try to get you started...

(Graphing in a ) 2-D wonderland - to the tune of (Walking in a) Winter Wonderland

Rays and Lines

Intesectin'

On a plane

That's cartesian

We'll total with ease

The sum of their degrees

Graphing in a 2-D wonderland

Repeat ad naseum

in math you dont need to memorize - you need to understand

yeah, i'd say report her, and do not do the damn assignment

it's gonna be even funnier if nobody in the whole class does the assignment

Hmm...

How much math have you had Cd? Sure, you need to understand the concepts - but in many disciplines (geometry being one) memorization is key. You need to know what the rules and theorems are to be able to understand how to use them. This isn't like differential equations, where you are learning a process - geometry is about the use of theorems - and the theorems need to be memorized.

Like I said, don't be a baby and go running to complain to your mother or the principal. Suck it up, act like an adult, and do the freaking assignment. Its not like the teacher is ordering you to strip naked or anything.

Sheesh.

haha my AP calc teacher had a whole crap load of math songs and we used to sing em instead of working. Embarasment is usless. It is the stupidest of all human emotion, and from the outside it wont be even as remotly embarasing ass you think it will be. Anyone that woulnt want to be your freind or what not because of this i doubt youd realy want as a freind, unless she has realy big hohas

It's not uncommon to use mnemonics in education, infact I'm sure all of us know at least one thing that we learned by mnemonics, for example:

In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue

Every Good Boy Does Fine (Piano Notes EGBDF)

Thirty days hath September... (Days in each month)

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally (Algebra Calculations)

Righty tighty, lefty loosie (Screwing unscrewing etc)

Spring ahead, Fall back (Dayligt savings time)

One that would work well for you had you thought of it and should at least give you a good idea of where you should go from here:

(Oh Christmas Tree)

Oh isosceles, oh isosceles

Two angles have

Equal degrees

Oh isosceles, oh isosceles

You look just like

A Christmas tree

Certainly remembering is an important part of learning, it's important to remember for example that a negative times a negative equals a positive (If you've seen Stand and Deliver I guarantee you remember that) and of course it's important to understand what it means.

Bottom line is that it's very common to use mnemonics and if you knew so much about teaching you'd be the teacher and not the student.

Cd,

Now where did I say that understanding WASN'T important - or that I was advocating JUST memorizing them. In many situations, the understanding is more important than the memorization. And there are instances where you need to memorize to different degrees (history for example, doesn't require the same level of memorization as chemistry - or at least shouldn't).

What I AM advocating is for the original poster to do the freaking assignment.
