matt74441
Under the lightning rod is the television tower, blimp dock and observatory I believe. They abandoned the blimp (zepplin) dock after the Hindenburg blew up.
SanGreal
They abandoned the blimp (zepplin) dock after the Hindenburg blew up. Right, but isn't it still physically there? (I don't know, I just assumed it was)
matt74441
It still is, but I don't think they ever used it.
bayrider
i think this is all the help u need. The metal part is nothing but a decoration, it serves no real function like most buildings (especially asian ones) but ontop of the spire is an antenna for radio and tv etc.

bayrider
they put a 300 foot antenna at 4 Times Square. When the new WTC is built the TV Broadcasters will have their wishes of having an antenna 2100ft in the air. Currently the ESB antenna goes up to "only" 1480ft
rekka
That blimp landing sure was a wacky idea, wasn't it? Not really. Nowadays buisness visitors land outside the city and have to make their way into NY, which with congestion and all takes time. This way would of allowed visitors to be in the centre of the NY buisness district as soon as they touched down. Great idea really.

What made it really wacky is the high winds that canoccur in "urban canyons".
