it costs $245AUD to take a MCSE exam.

if you take it, all you really require is to read Exam-cram books (red) (once i get some time, i'm going to study 70-270 (XP Pro)). you can buy these books at Dymocks or Collins- for around $110 (sometimes they are discounted to $20). read the first few pages, they tell you how the exam works. or if you're cheap like me, just use Kazaa, type in the exam number under documents, and there should be a few PDFs.

i discourage you to take the 2000 exam. my lecturer says by 2005, companies and home users using 2000 will advance to other OS, Linux or maybe XP+. i.e. 2000 will become obsolete, and your qualifications won't be really nesscessary.

really, people who do these exams only want to pass so they either pass prerequisites for courses or jobs or just to have an impressive resume. if you're a home user who doesn't require it for work, it's a waste of time, effort and money.

take a look at prometric.com. it allows you to schedule an exam at a convient location, like an office in the CBD or something.

"Revised exam-retake policy

Microsoft has revised its policy for retaking exams to increase security. If you do not pass an exam the first time, you may retake it at any time. If you do not achieve a passing score a second time, you must wait at least 14 days to retake the exam a third time. A 14-day waiting period will be imposed for all subsequent exam retakes. If you have passed an exam, you cannot take it again. Beta exams may be taken only once.

Preparation is the key to success...

...and practicing with a high quality exam simulation is essential. Prometric recommends Self Test Software, Microsoft's Official Practice Test Provider. Since 1992, Self Test Software has provided practice tests for the Microsoft MCSE and MCSD certification tracks. These practice tests are effective, inexpensive tools used by certification candidates to evaluate their knowledge, pinpoint areas requiring further study, and help decide when they are adequately prepared to sit for the exam."

well, there are courses, but i doubt they are in Australia. i don't think they are nesscessary anyway, you could finish studying for an exam by reading at home.

studying for an exam = preparing.

it's a waste of $245 to just go in without any preperation at all, the questions can get very hard.

here is an example question from 70-270 MS Windows XP Professional taken from TestKing:

You are an desktop administrator for your company. All employees have Windows XP Profesisonal computers. A user called Anne is given a portable computer. She successfully installs her printer and scanner harware.

Two weeks later, Anne installs and updates printer driver. When she restarts her computer, she gets the following message

"STOP.IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Anne restarts her computer, and gets the same error message.

You need to ensure Anne can successfully start Windows XP Professional. What should you do?

[4 multiple choice questions i can't be screwed typing]

i'm trying to illustrate that these questions are not easy as some may think and are not that basic. tell me what test you want to do (go to the Microsoft site) and i'll try see if i can help you out by giving you some E-Books.

for a full list of the exams, go to the Microsoft site and follow the links.

if you want to do an exam, you need to make a booking (in your case, somewhere in Sydney, usually an office building or in a campus) through Prometric- go there for a full list of locations.

i just started an MCSA course through selfcert.com and it cost me $2,800AUD and i wish i never signed up for it lol

only because it's not how i want to study, sitting at my computer for hours upon end just reading the content and doing test exams...i'm not really learning much :( but it's too late now to do anything about it

the best way i think is to spend a few hundred dollars and buy the books, set up a small home network and practice!
