+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted December 10, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted December 10, 2003 My bro has a pair of Techniks, 210 or 120 or some such. He swears by them. Apparently they are the DJ model of choice.
Dejon
I would go with techniks.

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted December 10, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 10, 2003 It's Technics, btw :p From my perspective (aka, a DJ), I'd get either a Technics SL-1210MG5 or a Numark TT-X1 if you wanna save a little money. I've gotta upgrade my two Gemini's downstairs, actually... Thanks for reminding me :p :D
Coeus
Ehh...sorry to all the DJs (and I'm one too) but as far as sound quality, little record wear, and over-all hi-fi, Technics are not the way to go. While yes, they are the player of choice for DJs, they do not provide that good of sound quality. 1200s are built more for durability and not skipping. If you want a good quality record player for just your listening pleasure, I suggest you look around on google for high quality record players or hi-fi record players. There are plenty of review sites and forums for analog heads. But, by all means, don't get a DJ record player for its sound quality.

Lefhark
I use an NAD (New Audio Dimension) 533 MK IV wirh Ortofon OP1 pickup and am very happy with it. It's fairly inexpensive and has a good audio quality (totally manual turntable arm. Belt drive.) Puristic but worth every cent. Price: around $300 -Lef

bctrainers
as a mobile DJ there are many different types of TT's to choose from. going from the high end club TurnTable down to the normal Turn Tables's. here are some companies to look at: American DJ Vestax Turntables Numark Stanton Gemini Technics Denon or you can go to sixstardj.com's LARGE selection of TT's from above here: http://www.sixstardj.com/turntables.html :dj:
MR_Candyman
Well, there's the Technics 1200 (mk2, mk3, mk4, mk5...all with slight differences) there's also the 1210 if you're in europe. The Numark TTX1 is AMAZING and is MY turntable of choice. The Vestax PDX is a great turntable aswell. Right now I wouldn't look at another DJ turntable than those 3. Stanton has a nice one out but they've always had performance problems with their turntables. BTW: Modern DJ cartridges don't "cut deep". They're elliptical or round (depending on cartidge) and really don't hurt the record that much...but all turntables I've listed have the tonearm weight adjust anyways... You wanna get some good feedback on this stuff I suggest you head over to www.xfaders.com where I am also a moderator of. Friendliest DJ community there is IMHO. Lefhark
You wouldn't want a direct drive like all the DJing turntables are for hifi music reproduction at home, cause they add resonance to the turntable plattern, which will find its way to the cartridges pickup, where belt drives turn the turntable plattern indirectly (no resonance, or way less). Whatever you do, try to get a turntable with beltdrive. -Lef
MR_Candyman
depends what he wants to do with it.... if oyu're using it for hi-fi then get a hi-fi turntable...you wanna dj then get a dj turntable...

Of course. Scratching would be impossible with a belt drive. Also Direct drives are more responsive. -Lef
MR_Candyman
scratching's not impossible with a belt drive at all...the belt just has a tendancy to wear extremely fast and/or snap. Even Mixing is better with a direct drive though as the simple stopping of the platter is horrendous on the belt. Direct drives are more responsive because they have more torque (in general) and the simple fact it doesn't have to deal with a rubber band absorbing the torque the motor produces. djgramma
Well, with DJ'ing, you gotta go with Technics. Those are the best. If it's value, Vestax or Numark. But... with quality in mind (if you're just gonna be listening to music) go for a belt driven high quality turntable. I believe Hi-Fi magazine reviews the best so you wanna check that mag out. Cheers

I agree they are good turntables, BUT you'd be VERy surprised how many people have them break but have it fixed and never tell anybody because they think they're the only ones. Techs are overpriced and lack the features I use...and yes I do use mor ethan +-16% pitch, which is Technic's highest offering (Mk5). I do use key lock. I do like to be able to switch the fader to battle style or standard. The newer turntables haven't been out long enough to claim "durability" but believe me, they work just as well in a pro DJ environment.

MR_Candyman
the SL-23's a good choice for hifi listening...the other's not really worth it IMHO.
