game_over
I'm looking for a cheap tablet primarily for watching plex. The ipad mini in our house is constantly in use so we want a second device to watch movies and tv shows, it won't be used much so I can't justify the cost of another ipad. The only requirements are nice display, similar size to ipad mini, and supports streaming from a plex server.. I'm leaning towards the kindle fire but haven't really been following the tablet scene, is there anything else worth looking at?
Brandon H Supervisor Posted August 8, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted August 8, 2014 cheap small tablet. there is really only one good option & that's the Nexus 7 the Nexus 7 has always ruled in price/size/spec since it first came out
Max Norris
I have a couple Nexus 7's and an original Kindle Fire (non-HD) in the house, all with Plex. It does run on the Kindle, but the iffy performance can be problematic at times. Personally, you'll be much happier with the Nexus across the board. Faster, better display, etc etc. The Fire HD's a bit better and saves you a few bucks, but I'd still spend a little more and get a better experience with Plex and everything else, never mind totally avoiding the hassle of quirky custom firmware if you want a "regular" Android setup. Not a fan of the stock Kindle setup at all.

Max Norris
Get what you pay for. Slower, low memory, low resolution, etc etc. Just my opinion, but I've been burned on a couple "budget/disposable" tablets in the past, never again.
Astra.Xtreme
I'd also suggest the Nexus 7. If price is a factor, buy a used one on Ebay. I bought mine for $130 several months ago. Even at $230, it's an amazing value for such great hardware. +E.Worm Jimmy 1 Share
game_over
I guess i thought there would be some decent cheap tablets.. but at ?199 for a Nexus it makes sense to pick up a regular iPad mini for an extra few quid since we're already deep in that eco system. Thanks.
Beyond Godlike
My Nexus 7 was hell. I had the 2013(current latest) and sold it soon after because of the touch issues that plague a large number of them. Worst off, coworkers and I got that N7's noticed it got worse the more google tried to fix it. For example, wouldnt respond to touches when laying flat. Wouldnt respond to touches randomly otherwise. Asus tablets(who make the N7) are just the worst quality. Find an older gen samsung, theyre always on sale, or second hand. I actually replaced my N7 with an ipad mini retina, and holy iOS is so much more response to touch than android(also have a nexus 5).
