Man Gunned Down by Police in Walmart While Shopping for Air Gun

It's disrespectful of you to talk like that towards those people that are protecting your home, family and country (military included) for what they get paid and benefits.

I thought the official position of most gun lobbyists was that the police weren't there to provide people with personal protection?

In my personal opinion firearms police need to receive better training as incidents like this tragedy happen far too often. It makes me glad that most cops this side of the pond don't carry their weapons and are accountable even if they use their tasers and pepper spray.

The gun should have had an orange tip. How did the officers not see that?

It wasn't on it, according to the video that was shown of the weapon.

The COPS did the right thing here.  The guy refused to put the gun down and the witnesses stated.

The idiot was pointing the gun at people and making shooting sounds according to the eye witness.  The local news (Cincinnati) had great coverage of it.

That's how we played cops and robbers when I was a kid...

"Gun noises" is the key word.  If that's even what he was doing.  The guy that called it in couldn't even get his story straight according to article.

It's interesting how you always generalize ALL police officers as abusing their power and then how you think someone with a gun should under ALL circumstances be taken in alive, at the cost of how many civilian and police officers doing their job. MOST Police and Security officers are good people, doing their job and barely making it by risking their lives for $12 to $15 an hour.

Only if they are American.

"American freedoms" ... In this day and age, can you really say that with a straight face?

Funny, I have not lost any of my freedoms.  I do whatever I like within the limits of the law.

The most vocal about loss of rights are usually the idiots out there challenging officers to see how far they can push the envelope.

Here is a perfect example.

Compared to what he says, we still have "too much freedom", so it's more of a in comparison type of thing

Ohio is an open carry state, meaning even if it were real it shouldn't have been an issue.

reported ... that the man was pointing the gun at people, including small children.

What? How? Replica guns should have an orange tip on it, in the USA.

Regardless, considering it's a police involved shooting, I believe the officer(s) are now placed on leave pending an investigation, no?

The police officer(s) responsible should lose their jobs and be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. It is absolutely unacceptable the way that US police officers abuse their power and gun down suspects without a second thought.

Even if it had been a real gun he should have been brought in alive.

also charged.

I think he was referring to the first paragraph about the cops involved being fired.

The glorification and defending of cops in this country is ridiculous. They are licensed thugs and criminals and can and do get away with murder every single time. Every single year officer related shootings (every one of them lethal) keep going up, and in most cases the officers are never even accused let alone convicted.

People forget that cops are PUBLIC SERVANTS. Why don't the same laws apply to them? A cop (and anyone part of DA's office) can legally break any law and claim ignorance. They can break into people's homes, arrest, beat them up, confiscate property, all of it based on wrong info, and there are zero consequences.

You people need to read about the militarization of local police forces and the steady increase and abuse in power with no corresponding increase in crime over thelast few decades.

The problem is that those bad and abusive police officers?and there are a lot of them?ruin it for the decent ones. I appreciate that police in America are under incredible pressure, as unlike the UK they could be shot dead at any incident, but it still doesn't excuse the trigger happy culture that we are seeing.

I agree with this. Another problem is US police have too much power. Most police in other countries can't just arrest anyone they please on the spot, or open fire on them, every officer isn't even issued a firearm.

Police do a necessary and dangerous job, but because they have power, they need to be held to a much higher standard. Their job isn't an excuse to abuse their power.

it would have been easier for everyone if he just put it down.... guessing, don't know for sure, but strong feeling.

He was just shopping. He was probably confuse by the event. When you are confused you tend to be slower than usual.

Way to blame the victim there.  It's not like it was a harmless air gun or anything.

Occams Razor. Basically, the simplest answer is most often correct.

Guy is handling something that looks like a gun in a toy department that sells toy guns, making gun noises, probably saying "bang" etc.

The odds are extremely good that it's a toy. Think hard before opening fire, which also puts bystanders at risk (especially cops, who shoot bystanders at a 5x higher rate than armed civilians do.)
