Sweet jobs?

I hear ya, well good luck.

Oh and that guy has THE job. But isn't "playing on the wrong side of the fence" a requirement for that? Nothing personal.

i work in a computer store fixing stupid peoples stupid problems.. and i build computers.. and i mean i build them.. it will be over 100 machines this month alone..

if i seem un happy well i am..

im the only tech here and aside from building close to 100 machines a month i also have to fix the instore computers and all the people that bring in their problems...

Hehe, I'd love that job. I used to be the only tech here, besides my boss. I worked on stupid people's computers all day, I don't build computers because we work in the government, we like things simple and effecient *ahem* Dell *cough* But I'd love to build em constantly as well as work on stupid people's computers. That'd be a sweet ass job.

I love my job too, always something to do. If not, I check out Neowin and the tech news around the web. :ninja:

Cheers

I'm a senior at Cornell University...doing Operation Research and Industrial Engineering major...quite fun.

Simulations modeling, linear optimization, programming, tons of IT stuff. It's a good time.

Some of these jobs people have sound great. They're exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. Here's my question:

How did you get started? I realize some of you got lucky with finding jobs during the internet boom, but IT jobs are hard to come by now.

Basically, I want your jobs. Where do I go from here? I know my stuff, but I don't know how to get my foot in the door to prove it.

Thanks,

Paul

P.S. - Hey, if any of you are looking for programming/IT people with business operations/optimization experience, I'm looking for a job and I'd love to send you my resume :)

Paul, unfortunately, in this economy, the only way to get a job is to create one! I too was unemployed until I met someone who wanted my talents in developing this computer processor. Start your own company, that is the real job and one that is more educational than working for someone else.

Head of the IT Dept for a Law Firm... it's not the best of jobs I've had, but it's nice. :) Besides that I run my own side business and do IT work for other companies... oh, and you can't forget my other full time job... the AutoPatcher. ;)

@SirEvan - I checked out your site... all I can say is... you're one lucky S.O.B. :p

Haha thanks for the compliments guys.... It's a fun job, but honestly, It's not a steady pay check... I get a portfolio job here, a website shoot there, someone wants to buy prints off the site.... or I get a poster or calendar offer....but It's kinda like living pay check to paycheck... Thats why I'm trying to get back into the computer scene doing tech support/network installs.

The photography thing is a lot of fun tho, I've met TONS of hot girls, and have made friends with almost all of them... I've also gotten to go some places I don't think i'd ever go if I did anything else (like the womens changing room at fashion shows :D ) Haha, and I'm currently working with 2 other people on a swimwear or lingerie calendar for 2005 or 2006, plus some lingerie posters for some car show models, so I'm kinda set for right now, but it's not all that easy, and it's a huge financial investment.. I currently own around 10,000$ worth of equipment, and have spent probably 3-4000 on shoots, but it's a ton of fun in the end, and I do get something for it. When I get some new material that I can toss up on my site (some models don't want their pics on the net, so not every shoot I've done is on my site) I'll post samples as always here and on my deviant art site too :) I know you guys like eye candy :)

Haha, optiplex. Doesn't matter what school you go to. Jobs are still hard to come by.

Wait for a couple years? What do I do until then? My parents would kill me after spending money on school and just have me move home. I'm not against moving back home, but if I can I'd love to work. I really enjoy work, it has NOTHING to do with money. As long as I'm doing some technical work I'm happy.

How much does it cost to live in paris man?

an arm, a leg, and your right testicle mate...as compared to the states. If you are from New York or somewhere similar, say San Franciso or Chicago, then its not so bad for shelter. I've heard its comparible to a little more cost than living in new york...but cheaper than london. What makes it expensive is the food...the food is ****ing outrageous! You can usually get a decent deal at the open markets, usually twice a week. Otherwise, if you want a bag of peanut m&ms (which are made in France btw for the frenchies), it costs 8 euros (roughly $9.50) for a bag of peanut m&ms that would cost $1.50 in the states. And if you are trying to buy meat here...god help you...part of the reason I've lost 30 pounds since i've been here (a LINK of sausage is like $20). No way am I paying that much for a piece of fat...i'll live on the crepes and cheap bread.

the transportation is cheap and cabs are pretty cheap too compared to where i'm from in the states. Museums are only free on the first sunday of every month and if you don't get there before noon...better bring a few things to read and a bite to eat.

The rent is bad here too...my apartment is 1/4 the size of the house I owned in Atlanta, Alpharetta to be exact. I paid $650 a month for mortgage and $900 on a high month for tv, internet, insurance, fees, water, electric, and gas. for my aparmtent here, 1500 euros ($1800) a month just for the rent, that doesnt include phone, internet, etc...i have roughly 900 square feet as compared to my 2000 something + in atlanta. Electricity and everything else is twice what i would pay in the states and the internet....**** me, i pay nearly 80 euros a month for 1mb down and 128k up. absolute bull****. BUT, its the first time ive ever seen a DSL connection stay on for longer than 2 days...I've been here 3 months and it hasn't gone down once, and after I worked for Earthlink doing thier DSL, France Telecom has me impressed. You can even access your account info online without logging in, it somehow recognizes your line and you go directly to your custom page, custom blah...pretty nice.

anyway, if you are planning to come to Paris...better do some saving...just a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower is near $45 (40 euros). A sandwich will run you anywhere from 3 euros to 5 depending on where you get it...and a drink...33cl, thats your average canned sprite in the states, will run you about $2-3. not to mention your hotel which you can find a shared room somewhere for about 30 euros a night, but for a HOTEL hotel, minimum 150-200 euros for a room the size of your bathroom.

I do like living here, so far...but I miss a few things like HUGE ASS medium chunk-o-bull STEAKS (they think a steak here is similar to the size of a porkchop), all you can eat chinese buffets, REAL tacos, $1 margarita nights, a fat greasy burger with swiss cheese and mushrooms...GOOD sushi...and brownies, they have no idea what a brownie is here. I also miss some home cooked specials like gumbo, jambalaya, and crawfish...god i can't wait to come home next friday for christmas...mmmm mmm food.

and you neowin mods living in london...i don't feel sorry for your rent or anything else...at least you have STEAK sauce, bbq sauce that isn't ketchup with a kick, decent pizza, Doritos, real chicken noodle soup, and a plethora of other similar american goodies...not to mention, when i go to buy ground meat at the store, you don't have to check to see if its horse or not...and yes, the french EAT horses...apparently some special kind of horse bread and fed like a cow for eating... :x

*edit i hate typos
