How reliable is the Xbox One?

Recommended Posts

As for the reliability of the Xbox One, its seems to have been built much better than the X360's and their failure rates are very low. If you do get a faulty one you will notice fairly quickly and will be able to return for warranty claim and get a working one.

Speaking from an end user point of view I agree! Also speaking as a console technician, they are better built than Sony consoles, always have been. Bigger case, big fan/heatsink, everything's bolted to a metal chassis with machine screws, which helps with cooling and structural integrity (Sony consoles have little structural integrity, they have their boards screwed straight into plastic with self-tapping screws, my worst enemy!! God help you if you drop the console). The outer casing of the XOne is a little rattly, but like I said, it's just an outer shell like the body panels on a car, the metal chassis is solid underneath.

The PS4 is cramped like the PS3 slim, it has a tiny fan, they're STILL routing hot air from the CPU through the hot PSU out the back like the PS3, they haven't learnt any lessons. That's why the PS4 fan needs to stay running after the console is off! Microsoft route the hot air upwards, where heat naturally wants to go, with a horizontal fan and heatsink so the air is pulled upwards. Heat rises, Sony, have you not learnt that yet? Microsoft realised this with the 360 S!

The bluray drives on the One are better than the PS4. The PS4 has a lot of exposed gearing on top of the drive, which makes me cringe, if you drop something on the console hard, damage is likely, something will go ping! I've had too many dead Sony consoles to trust Sony anymore, they're all talk, they haven't changed their design skills, all they do is ridicule the competition (anyone remember how they took the ###### outta MS for releasing several versions of 360, then hypocritically went and did it themselves with the PS3?) so I'm not taking the risk with PS4. I like Xbox and am proud of it, hate me if you want, but Microsoft know how to build hardware, and learn from mistakes (most of the time!).

The RRoD wasn't really their fault, blame lead free solder and RoHS crap legislation for that, solder problems are everywhere, I know from experience, I'm a vacuum rework engineer! I've dealt with a lot of PS3 YLoD's and nVidia GPU issues on laptops to know it isn't just MS. As far as the more power in the PS4 is concerned, it's hotter running faster RAM, so we'll see in a while when the failures start, like the PS3's did, they thought they were perfect until YLoD started :)

Console technician? Isn't that just a term people give themselves who have just figured out how to mod a console?

Also heat does rise but a fan also sucks out that heat and pushes it out of the system, do you not know basic physics of air flow? Sony have never had an over-heating issue like Microsoft's RRoD fiasco with the X360. I don't know the specifics of how either of the current gen systems circulate heat but neither of them seem to have over-heating issues.

Not sure how the blu ray drives are better in the Xbox One when quite a few Xbox One's had BR drive issues and I haven't heard about any on the PS4. Sony are also one of the major founders of blu-ray technology so I would expect them to be pretty good at making BR drives by now.

It was Microsoft's fault for using lead-free solder without stress testing the system with it.. if that was the cause. I've seen articles which point in other directions but either way no one but Microsoft are at fault when it comes to the design and materials used in their system regardless of any RoHS directives.

Why are you buying from Australia?

Unless its a second hand Xbox One from ebay for cheap you can get it for much cheaper elsewhere. I live in Australia and wanted to get a PS4 in the US while I was on a business trip but it was sold out, so I eventually bought one back in Australia for $100 more than what it costs in the US. Not sure why you would buy the Xbox One from Australia when its RRP is also $100 more than places like the US.

As for the reliability of the Xbox One, its seems to have been built much better than the X360's and their failure rates are very low. If you do get a faulty one you will notice fairly quickly and will be able to return for warranty claim and get a working one. One of the mods made some posts about his Xbox One warranty claims on these forums not too long ago (He got like 3 bad Xbox One's in a row, until he got a good one) but that was during the launch period and that was just extremely unlucky.I don't think you'll have an issue with buying one now.

It's about $250-300 cheaper than India. :/

Err, no. Console Modder is the term you're looking for.

Don't insult my intelligence. The natural way heat travels is to rise, you might want to Google it. A fan pushing heat out the back of a case is not the natural way it wants to go.

Well they're not. Have you not seen the massive number of faulty lasers, both BluRay and standard lasers like the PS1 and 2 that have failed? The issues with the Xbox One were launch issues, not seen any for a while.

Again, your lack of actual knowledge is tripping you up. I'm not even going to educate you, you can do it yourself, but since 2006 when RoHS came in there have been widespread issues with BGA, lead free solder, and thermal expansion on devices from laptops to TV's and graphics cards. Do your research, and if you're using "articles" off the INTERNET of all places to argue with my physical experience, you're gonna lose. The amount of reports on the internet are few and far between compared to statistics from repair companies like me. It's only because every job we do stays out of the media that it goes unnoticed. Someone cries on Twitter about their phone battery exploding it becomes Internet front page news, like the Dell exploding battery news did a few years ago.

I think the early reports of bad drive's were from the pre-release fast food console winners.

Not the launch / main production models.

This varies greatly with what I heard people say who worked the manufacturing lines in 2005 pumping these things out. It was GET THEM OUT THE DOOR instead of 7/10 are failing, there's probably a design issue. Also for future reference the solder didn't just magically fail because its lead-free. The CPU/GPU reaching 80C while in the dashboard probably was the issue, as games require a lot more of the systems juice than the dashboard did. Anyway MS went good for it in the end, which to me was confirmation it was their fault. I kinda feel TheSpecialist was hired by MS at times to reduce warranty claims at the expense of their developers.

Sony + lasers = fail. I made so much money off rebuilding/replacing PS2 lasers I bought a $840 PS3 when it launched, only to need a new laser for that 14 months later... The engineering behind the original lens is incredible though. In reality 2 lenses was much cheaper and better preforming.

Unless you've enjoyed Kinect in the past I would suggest you skip it. $40 could go towards a game instead.

It is different then the 360 kinect. Not just in how it performs, but also in regards to what features it adds to the system.

But I doubt there is much interest in hearing about that. Best to just steer clear.

Hey guys!

I'm planning to pick an Xbox One from Australia as it will work out nearly $250 cheaper than what is available in India (We have ###### pricing)

My only concern is that is the console reliable? I have heard about:

1)E100 and 2) Disc Drive problems.

Apparently a lot of folks at /r/XboxOne are also having problems with getting their discs read after the August update.

I know that no electronic is 100% reliable, my own luck matters and that warranty will be only for a year but I'm a little skeptic about Xbox One (Thanks to the whole 360 fiasco)

My other option is then to pick Ps4 which I think has reliable hardware comparatively.

Eventually I know that I'm going to end up with both but right now I need to figure out which one to pick first.

Any help will really be appreciated.

Thx

Digital download is the way to go man...i don't have one disc for my Xbox one..well if bandwidth is not an issue.

Let's swing this back to OP's original question rather than dragging up decades of console history.

None of the manufacturers have a perfect history so it's a pointless endeavor.

Microsoft has had a recall on the xbox (faulty PSUs and they sent you a free fused plug to prevent house fires) and a high failure on the xbox 360 (rrod), so historically the reliability isn't great with microsoft in general. The xbox one has a high standby power usage to boot, which is probably somewhat good in terms of reliability as it should keep the temperature of the console more stable and prevent cold solder joints from forming due to the shrinking/expanding with temperature changes. I know 3 people who have purchased the xbox one, 2 at launch and one a few months later and I have not heard of any issues with the units as of yet. Their only complaint is getting a kinect with it, haha.

Do note that it isn't doing much yet either, as the software side is still under heavy development. The hardware is much more powerful but only running slightly better looking games than their previous generation, so lower CPU/GPU usage and less stress on the components. I don't know if this draws any real conclusion. Its too soon to tell but if conscience serves this xmas we'll see the failures roll in on the forums after the years warranty period expires and it costs people money. If you are sceptical the second revision of the hardware will likely come within the next 6 months to year and offer power savings, design improvements (swappable HDD? pretty please?) along with a lower price point as they are cheaper to produce. These sometimes can only be discovered by comparing the power ratings as the outward design won't change (although it could with removal of kinect and PS4 skinny design).

If you are looking to get one I'd personally wait until then OP as better exclusive games will hopefully be out then too, and the ones out now will be in the bargain bin. Unfortunately if you swap Xbox one with PS4 I'd say the same thing, its too early. If you are looking to get one or the other, base it on the software only at this point. Which games are you more excited about? which games are out you wanna play? want EA's vault or Sonys 1hr game share? Want PS+ with free older games or Xbox live community?? and possibly the biggest one, which one did your friends choose or are leaning to? Its cheap to physically share games & do online with friends.

So why then if it failed ONLY because of lead free solder did reballed 360s failed with lead solder after a years use? Design problems??You do realize that leaded solder fails too.

Do you have EVIDENCE of these "reballed" consoles with LEAD solder that fail again? Most of the ones I've done with lead never come back, neither do the ones I've seen on the internet. It's a mixture of Lead-free solder AND BGA technology that causes the failure. It's awful, as I've posted many times on the internet. The industry needs to go back to pass through PGA techniques for high temperature chips, heck even socketed chips :)

The SoC in the Xbox One throttles, so it cools down when idle, the 360 one wasn't so efficient, the One's chip doesn't get anywhere near as hot anyhow, so only time will tell.

Decided to pick Xbox One for this holiday as Ps4 lacks where exclusives are concerned. (I don't want to invest in last gen)

Lbp and Drive club are not for me.

I plan to pick Ps4 within another 6 months maybe from India itself since it will come with warranty.

The only reason I was checking whether Xbox One would be more reliable or not because it's being picked from Australia and will be played in India and there will be no warranty on it unless I send it back to Australia. I'm picking it from outside India because it's saving me $300 almost and I'm a bit cash strapped at the moment.

(I found a few posts on reddit a few days back how a few people had drive issues after the August update and MS asked them to send it for replacement)

Logical conclusion would be to pick a console which would be reliable and wouldn't die on me. If the Xbox One is reliable and it has a good number of exclusives coming out this year, it would be the best to pick it this year [emoji4]

Are you buying a second hand console from ebay because RRP in Australia is $499 for Xbox One without kinect. That saves you about $171 from the price you said earlier even though a quick google search shows you can get it cheaper than that price you mentioned in some Indian stores. But it is still cheaper in the US and many other places.

Doesn't really make sense to me, but if you want to buy it from Australia that's your choice I guess.

Without Kinect

It's going to be costing 40K in India ($670) so 170 saved plus GST refund for tourists ($50 or maybe more) and getting a physical copy of a game free :) so about 250ish

I over estimated it to $300

Not picking it from US because Xbox One uses a different voltage so I will need a power converter. Dubai and Australia or Europe is preferred since it's same as India. This isn't an issue with Ps4 fortunately.

Had mine since a fortnight after UK release and had no issues.

Use it all day as a TV box and then most nights as a games machine, blue ray player, entertainment system.

I think you'll be fine.

Rude much?

That aside, with regards to air flow. Yes, heat does want to go up, so having a fan that helps that happen is a lot more efficient than trying to route it all backwards.

As ironic it may sound, Ps4 is $100 more expensive than Xbox One in Australia.

Being unemployed, I'm trying to save wherever I can till I don't get a job. Add to the fact that, Xbox One has better games including exclusives coming out this year than PS4.

Some recent reddit threads:

I appreciate everyone trying their best to help me and for the vote of confidence :)

True! I feel US is the cheapest along with HK to buy electronics.

In India both Xbox One without Kinect and Ps4 are costing approx $670

Yup. Hence My family member got it from US. Cost me just ? ??,???. But in stores, it's going for ? ??,???

Same pricing for Xbox One.

Unfortunately you need to actually be a tourist to get the GST refund with the Tourist Refund Scheme, you need to physically go through a Australian airport and give your receipts to the TRS. Maybe the retailer you are buying from is just not including GST in the cost value and that would make sense that it comes out a bit cheaper cause of the power supply issue as-well. (Separate OEM Power supply would cost you around $60).

As an Australian it is cheaper for me to buy a Xbox One from the US with shipping costs and buying a separate power brick than it is to buy one in a local store, but we aren't exempt from GST and other taxes for locally purchased products.

Firstly everyone should know that heat rises, not sure why you guys keep bringing it up like as if the fact you are aware of this is some sort of accomplishment secondly having a fan just push air up isn't much more efficient than having a fan pointing out the back or sides of the console/equipment.

xbox-one-teardown-578-80.jpg

Here is the fan setup of the Xbox One, it just pushes air up. One of the major downsides is if you place anything on top of the Xbox One you can close off the airflow of the console and cause overheating issues. Basically the engineering design team took the most basic option to implement a fan into the system.

26XtZKo.jpg

Here is the PS4 fan which circulates cool air through the system and pushes it through the heat sink and out the back. As you can see it is right at the top of the console so it too utilizes heats natural rising ability to collect that heat and push it out. Side benefit of it being pushed out the back is that you can't close off the airflow unless you are actually trying to. Having the cables coming out of the back and the back panel at a slant means its pretty much impossible to close off the airflow.

Here are both without the top cover.

Thank You!

I'm aware about it.

Cousin has gone for a vacation. He picked it from Ebgames which includes GST.

We are aware about TRS and the procedure as we have done it quite a few times for jewelry and electronics.

Cheers!

Aren't there going to be regional issues with buying a console from overseas? Game console discs have region coding, as is the case with video discs.

Games are region free on both the PS4 and Xbox One. Blurays on the other hand are often region locked with Australia being region B and India being region C. He will not be able to play region locked bluray's he buys locally on the Xbox One .
