Here is a link to the user manual: http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/4/42pf5521d_10/42pf5521d_10_dfu_eng.pdf

The first thing that strikes me is the resolution of the TV is 1024x1080. How does that work if it's a widescreen TV? Shouldn't the first number be the larger number (e.g. 1920x1080)?

Anyway, according to the manual (page 29), it supports up to 1024x768 if I connect my laptop to the TV via. HDMI. However, since that is of a 4:3 aspect ratio, won't that look odd on a widescreen TV? What should I use instead? 1280x720?

some plasmas do interlacing instead of displaying full progressive frames, so only around half the pixels in the horizontal are lit at one time, hence the 1024 horizontal resolution.

you cant use 1280x720 on the pc since the TV only supports a max of 1024x768 pc resolution. and yes, it will be pillarboxed, so you will get a 4:3 picture with black bars on the left and right.
