installing apps in gentoo w/o compiling..?

Recommended Posts

It is time consuming but once you have it done you don't need to worry about it anymore, this easy optimization part is one of Gentoos strengths and if your uncomfortable with it maybe you should try another distro.

unless they have premade binaries like openoffice already

the one that came with the 1.4 release on the second cd is broken, but you can download it from open office's site and it will install and function, but you'll have to point it to your java environment (blackdownjdk here :))

Usually if I need to upgrade any large packages or I plan to install something big, I set it at the end of the day and go home. Next morning, it's ready for me to use.

Absolutely, do it while your sleeping or when your doing something else and it won't be any trouble at all.

ok, thanks guys..., i though so...^^

i'm not that unconfortable using gentoo.., in fact, now that i got gentoo installed, installing applications is so easy..., i really like it...

another question though.., is it possible to back up the installation so that i won't need to waste two days to get everything up and running again if i mess up the system..?

Doesn't using binaries defy the whole point of using Gentoo? I only use binaries for packages that won't compile properly (like Mozilla Firebird).

Yeah it does, but i'm not wasting a day and a half to let kde compile when i need to use my machine ;)

If you want to save time later when you need to reinstall something from scratch (even the OS :ninja: ) you can set FEATURES="buildpkg" to have it make a binary package for you. Copy that to a CD so when you need to reinstall you have the binaries of stuff you need.
