anguilla1980
So I'm super excited because my boss approved me to buy a 512GB/i7 Surface Pro 3 for work BUUUUUT he wants one too and he only uses a trackball mouse!!!! I did a quick Google search and dude, I can't find a single bluetooth trackball mouse anywhere! WTF! Can't use the USB port because he will be needing to use that for the ethernet adapter half the time. Grrrr. Please help! Thanks! Alex
goretsky Supervisor Posted September 18, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted September 18, 2014 Hello, How about a Logitech Wireless Trackball M570 and a StarTech USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter NIC with USB Passthrough Port? You can plug the wireless adapter for the trackball into the passthrough port on the NIC. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
anguilla1980
Thanks for the suggestion but still not ideal. There has got to be a BT trackbal made somewhere by someone!
TAZMINATOR
There is no bluetooth enabled trackball mouse... Only wireless and USB trackball mice are available. Because the trackball mice were/are not popular these days. If you have to have a trackball mouse, contact the hardware company and see if they are willing to make one. goretsky 1 Share
pupdawg21
Get a Surface Docking station to add more USB ports and an Ethernet port. Then you will have ports for your regular usb trackball mouse and no longer need to take up the USB port with the Ethernet dongle. Since you said he has to wire in 1/2 the time it sounds like it will be stationary most of the times so the docking station might be a good idea. goretsky 1 Share

techbeck
Ah.. you found them... I couldn't find them.. But those you found aren't good based on the reviews. 3 out of 5 isnt to bad. I normally dont buy unless it is at least 4. Real issue is finding where you can buy them. Have not seen a site where they are in stock. Good luck finding where to buy one. No one has them in stock. BT trackballs, no one wants. I would suggest the RF trackball but may be a problem considering you need a dongle and the Surfaces only have 1 USB port. anguilla1980
No docking station, we are mobile 100% of the time. We just use ethernet cables to plug into PLCs for progrmaming. The Kensington Slimblade K72281 would be great if anyone had one in stock lol. I'll see if I can find it anywhere else, thanks!
Brandon H Supervisor Posted October 9, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 9, 2014 doing a quick google search with the model# for the kensington. this is the only site I've found that has it in stock http://techdealsstore.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=5275
Goalie33
Would a USB hub work? Plug that into the Surface & then go with the USB Ethernet adapter & a USB trackball.
anguilla1980
A USB hub is bulky and will be hanging off the side of the device, plus I'm not sure if the USB ethernet adapter would work thru it. The whole point in using the Surface is to have a tablet size device with nothing attached but the ethernet cable...
Brandon H Supervisor Posted October 9, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 9, 2014 is the trackball mouse an absolute must? I would try to explain how hard it is to find & see if he's willing to just get a normal bluetooth mouse for the surface

Glad you found it. I found this USB adapter for the Surface Pro. Looks to be the smallest you can get. Adds another USB port plus memory card readers. Doesnt look like it increases the bulk to much. Personally I would go with the HUB below. You can get much better RF mice and this hub doesnt add to much to the bulk. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00C7AQXQQ/thsuprbl-20 Supports USB 2.0 x2 (two USB inputs) Supports SDHC, MicroSDHC Supports SD/MicroSD Micro USB for Power Supply LEDs Indicate for working status/mode zhangm and DConnell 2 Share
sc302 Veteran Posted October 9, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 9, 2014 I would consider a usb hub or a docking station if he isn't going to be moving much with it and using it at one desk. We just got a surface 3 for one of our execs and she really likes it with the dock. trackballs...who uses those things anymore....
anguilla1980
Iy won't be used at a desk but out in the field like I mentioned, also it must be a trackball mouse for personal ergonmic reasons. He's the owner of the company, who am I to argue lol. BTW, that site that has the Kinsington in stock, I checked and it's not a legit site. As for that Surface 5 in 1 adapter, the reveiws say it doesn't fit the Pro, only the RT. The search continues....

anguilla1980
I think after everything I've seen, this is the best option: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CKIFPQY?pc_redir=1412276810&robot_redir=1 As much as I like the ones thats fit like they are part of the side of the Surface, neither appear to be USB 3.0 +techbeck, you're right, I only read far as the first reviewer that said it didn't fit, other below said it did. sucks it's not 3.0 tho and neither is the BestBuy one. Thanks everyone for their help, that's why I love this forum! EDIT: I went with this one just because it has indicator lights for the ethernet: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KGV7I9Y
sc302 Veteran Posted October 10, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 10, 2014 The 1st one you linked to has the leds but the leds are on top by the usbs not where the Network Interface is. The second one is a good choice too, I didn't originally link to it because the usb cable that interfaces directly with the surface detaches.
