Goin to Canada for New Years

Can I bring alcohol over the border from North America into Canada?

What is the legal drinking age?

What should I expect from the people who run the border patrol thingy? What should I be ready to provide and what should I be ready to hide?

Are passports necessary?

Thanks ahead of time. :D

You can, if you like to pay duty.

What is the legal drinking age?

Like bayrider said, 18 in Quebec and Alberta, 19 everywhere else.

They will ask you things and you answer them, purpose of visit etc. If you have something to hide, leave it at home.

Are passports necessary?

Always a good idea. If not, birth certificate and photo ID is a good bet.

Silly_Walk, what is duty? Is it some fee I'll have to pay if I have alcohol?

As far as where I'm going, I'm not quite sure yet, my friends and girlfriend are setting this up for all of us and it's being kept somewhat of a secret because it's also my birthday. Once I know I'll tell you guys.

Don't forget to check if your border has a duty free shop. Though, you can't buy in the US unless you're 21. I'm not exactly sure, but I believe if you buy something there and leave it in Canada... or on the side of the road as you puke it up... you don't have to pay duty coming back into the States.

As for the rest; yes, picture ID - drivers license and some other official card or document. I'm not sure how strict the Canadian border is around New Years, though. I would imagine both side would be on heightened alert for drunken teens and possible terrorists trying to spoil the party. But what could they bomb in Canada, eh? What do we have? CN Tower? pssh.. Only the tallest freestanding tower in the world (or something to that effect). The Montreal Forum? That hockey shrine is long since dead and turned into a ****ty complex (I know, I've worked there for 3 years). I dunno... there's really not much else of interest to blow up. Good drinking, though.

And remember, Montreal has the hottest girls this side of the Atlantic. It's not just me saying this, either. I have met people from all over and the majority of them have commented on the attractive female populous, and that their abundance far exceeds that of their town (Toronto, New York, LA, Chicago...).

Have fun for New Years. Go to Montreal. It's a wise choice. Nobody is any fun anywhere else.

Ha, thanks for all the replies thus far. If Canadian alcohol is better, than I may just wait, but since I'll be arriving around 8pm to whichever city Niagra Falls happens to be in, I was thinking that finding alcohol in a town I'm not familiar with on New Years Eve might be a problem, so that is the only reason why I considered taking it with me... But you're saying if I bring alcohol over the border into Canada, I'll likely have to pay some tax immediately while crossing the border?

And I'm gonna be 25 years old that night (my birthday), so no worries about my age... my girlfriend on the other hand will only be 20, so that is why I brought up the age question...

But I'm still a tad confuzzed about whether or not I'll have to pay the border pimps some sort of tax... ?

Don't bring alcohol across. Yes, hard liquor is probably more expensive in Canada but you can purchase alcohol in the duty free store on the Canadian side. Canada does have better beer with a higher %:

Keep in mind, however, that it is ILLEGAL to drink in public in Ontario and a brown paper bag won't save you from a $100-odd dollar ticket. That pretty much kills tail-gate parties at sporting events.

Some say bringing alcohol over the border is cool, some say it isn't... will I be hasseled if I have alcohol? As long as I can easily buy some alcohol on New Years night somewhere near the Hilton hotel I'm staying at (right next to the falls I guess), then I won't bother bringing any with me.

Thanks again.

The city Niagra Falls is in is.....*drum roll* Niagra Falls, Ontario lol

Anyways... don't bother bringing alcohol. Just buy it here. Your dollar is worth more here, so beer will be cheaper for you. You don't want to be paying taxes on beer you bring over the border. Like Silly_walk said its called Duty. AND you won't have a problem finding beer on New Years Eve. Niagra Falls is a busy place. Just ask whoever's around where the nearest Beer Store is (yes thats what its called)
