see if you can copy the hal.dl_ from the cd:i386

cd being the drive letter for the cd drive

so it's propably this but i'm not sure maybe someone can verify

copy cd:hal.dl_ c:windowssystem32

then I guess you will need to rename the hal.dl_ to hal.dll

then type exit

be sure to use the help

I cant even get to there. I cant access my NTFS partition at all.

When I boot and chose the recovery option it asks me to enter recovery disk, which I dont have.

Then I tryed to make one on my other desktop, but it did not work because is a different system.

It seems like my system is locked, and I started losing hope. Damn I have so much stuff on that computer.

I dont know what else to do........ :(

did you boot from the cd?

thats what you need to do. just as if you were installing windoes.

when it give the recovery option I think you need to press R on the keyboard then enter the administrators password

copy cdDrive:i386hal.dl_ C:windowssystem32

put in your own drive letters

Ok I got to the recovery prompt and I did copy the hal.dll to my system32 folder, but when I rebooted I got the same error.

I think that that file gets writen as you install XP and it contains your hardware, so I dont think its going to work if I just copy it over from a CD....

I had the same problem a while ago.

I rebooted to the last known good configuration which worked fine untill I rebooted again.

Then the trouble started again. I tried all the options already mentioned in the posts in this thread, but none worked.

When I got it to boot again I noticed it didn't show my boot menu ( I have a dual boot with win 98 )

I checked in my config screen to see what happened and noticed that my show bootmenu time was resetted to 0 secs.

after putting this back to 20 secs the problem was gone.

Now I only have an extra option in my bootmenu.

1 Windows XP professional

2 Microsoft Windows

and new => 3 Windows (default)

I haven't figured out how it got there or how to get rid of it...

Hope it helps a little

Grtz, Drac
