Unistalling Red hat 9

If you use LILO as your boot loader, you can restore your previous boot sector by typing /sbin/lilo -u /dev/hda. I'm not sure if this can be done using GRUB. Reboot your computer and Windows will load as normal, and you can use the Windows volume manager to remove the Linux partitons, or you could use something like Partiton Magic.

You can't use the Windows Partition Manager because it only supports FAT and NTFS.

Here's a real guide for doing this but remember instead of using fdisk for boot sector recovery, Use the recovery console's fixmbr command on the XP cd instead. This is really a page from the install guide.

Good Luck!

Just make sure you do things in the correct order, to make things easier!

I think RedHat has some info on the correct way to do this. I think it is to remove the Linux ext partition first, then fdisk /mbr the master boot record. That way Windows will be able to reclaim the unused space. If you fdisk /mbr first, then Windows will refuse to do anythign to the ext partition. (you can still fix this my minimally installing RH and removing it correctly)

That is, if things haven't changed since 1999. I haven't removed a Linux partition from Windows since then. I have removed my Win partition and run only Linux now, however... :D

how i did it was using partition magic 8 removed all of the linux partitions and merged them with the windows partition and then you boot off the Windows XP cd and go into recovery console and use the fixmbr and you may need to use fixboot as well .. hope it helps
