Celebration in Baghdad over reports of Saddam's capture

The Iraqi capital Baghdad has erupted in celebratory gunfire as unconfirmed reports spread of the possible capture of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

Members of the U-S appointed Interim Governing Council have confirmed the capture although U-S authorities are saying nothing.

Peter Cave reports from Baghdad.

It's believed that US forces captured SADDAM HUSSEIN during an early morning raid in his home town of TIKRIT. A spokesman for Governing Council member AHMAD CHALABI said SADDAM was found in the cellar of a house in his home town of TIKRIT wearing a false beard. Another member of the Governing Council NASSIR CHADERCHI said the US overseer in IRAQ PAUL BREMER had phoned members of the council to confirm the capture.

Before everyone starts to proclaim demands for execution or torture or other inhumane reasons (or declaring this man has no rights), read up the Geneva Convention. Of particular interest Part I, Article 3, Point 1, section D.
