ConfusedFusion
Hi All, Need your expert help in troubleshooting a mysterious case of my secondary HDD going missing. My Config: (Mother Board: Intel DB75EN, Processor: Intel i5-3330, Ram: 4GB DDR, NVidia GF119, Seagate 1TB SATA x 2, Windows 7) So I have these 2 Seagate (Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162) 1 TB SATA drives (C and D). It is really not predictable, but it happens daily where my D drive goes missing (one of the 2 SATA drives). I need to restart my system to get back my D drive but only for a few minutes before it goes missing again. I have . Updated Windows 7 . Updated BIOS and all relevant drivers . Changed SATA cables . Interchanged the C and D and did a complete re-install . Ran SeaGate tools to verify drive health So far I have not been able to figure out the problem. Despite a complete re-install and by interchanging the drives physically, I still have a missing drive that happens again and again either during operations or ad hoc and it is always the secondary D drive. Please help. -CF
The Evil Overlord
Sounds possibly like you might have failing hardware... which one? That's beyond me, sorry

goretsky Supervisor Posted October 27, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 27, 2014 Hello, Do you have another power supply you can try swapping in temporarily to see if that might be the problem? Regards, Aryeh Goretsky Hum 1 Share
Odom Member Posted October 27, 2014 Member Share Posted October 27, 2014 If you interchanged the drives, do you mean you swapped SATA ports? Did the drive disappear on the same SATA port again? If so it could be a faulty SATA port or cable. Try connecting the drive to another port and/or cable.
Hum
Maybe a Reinstall of the Chipset drivers would help. Check the motherboard manufacturers website/ Support for any Updates. My D drive is missing: Go to Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management and see if your D drive is listed there. If so, hover your mouse over the D drive icon until a text message appears and then copy down that message EXACT as it reads in the order presented and post it here. It not, it really isn't being recognized.Go to Start / Control Panel / Device Manerer and look for your D drive there. If you find it then double lick on it to show more details. Does it say that it's working properly? If it doesn't show up there then the system doesn't even have device drivers for it.Is your D drive a hard disk drive or partition or a CD/DVD drive or what? What is the manufactuer, make, and model or your computer and for D drive?Try removing the D drive and unpludding and replugging in the connections to see if that might be the problem. more here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/my-d-drive-is-missing/e14d5977-1758-464b-a2df-5b8b0611ccb6 http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/121701-suddenly-my-d-drive-missing.html
ConfusedFusion
Run this and post screenshots. Sure will do. Hello, Do you have another power supply you can try swapping in temporarily to see if that might be the problem? Regards, Aryeh Goretsky I do not have another powersupply but the system works just fine on C drive which ever drive I install the OS onto If you interchanged the drives, do you mean you swapped SATA ports? Did the drive disappear on the same SATA port again? If so it could be a faulty SATA port or cable. Try connecting the drive to another port and/or cable. I have replaced my old SATA cables with new ones. I have interchanged the ports on the physical drive itself and also tried using an unused port on the mobo as well. It is just that any HDD that I put as my secondary drive just disappears after a while till the next reboot

ProgRocker
If it disappears can you run Diskpart in a command prompt, then type "list disk". Does it show the second drive? Is it possible the PSU isn't giving out enough power for the second drive? Is it powered by SATA or Molex?
Hum
I have tried all those suggestions. Until I run the disk management tool the drive works just fine, but once I fire up the tool the drive disappears I can only say that it is probably a failing BIOS chip/motherboard. Replacement may be the answer.
