Frogboy Administrators Posted January 27, 2002 Administrators Share Posted January 27, 2002 Style XP doesn't compete with WindowBlinds. It is a patch that lets anyone use Microsoft's msstyles. So the real question is which is "better", msstyles (Microsoft's skins and their skin engine) or WindowBlinds (which on XP also uses a lot of XP's engine). 1) From what I've read it depends on the machine. On my machine, WindowBlinds skins feel faster. But I have read by others where they feel it slower. But WindowBlinds continues in development. Msstyles is not likely to gain a new upgrade until a new version of Windows. WindowBlinds 3 was faster than 2 and 3.1 is faster than 3.0 and the upcoming 3.2 is faster than 3.0. (I work for Stardock who makes WindowBlinds). So our goal is to eventually make sure WindowBlinds is faster on all machines. But from posts I've read, that isn't the case yet. It's a matter of identifying what the differences are in those systems and reproducing them. 2) I use both. In fact, one one machine I am running a Lord of the rings skin for msstyles and on here I'm running Logika for WindowBlinds. I can switch between them pretty easily. I don't use Style XP though, there are free patches that someone can link to here (I don't have one here). I patched my uxtheme.dll myself with a hex editor. Memory wise, neither uses much memory. To put things in perspective, ICQ uses around 12 megs of memory (don't know about the new one). An msstyle uses around 8 megs and WindowBlinds 7 megs. That is a fairly trivial difference. The main differences really come in what skins you want to run. Because WindowBlinds allows for such unstructured skins, many skins are pretty crazy. Since msstyles is pretty restrictive, most skins are fairly tame. The result is that it is easier to find an msstyel that is tame (and if you like tame skins, that's a good thing - most people want tame skins). It takes a little longer to find tame WindowBlinds skins. But I haven't found an msstyle that doesn't have a WB skin that is pretty similar. It can just take longer since one has to go through crazy skins. Example of a fancy skin: Example of a more traditional skin: Hope this helps.
