Dell Power Supply question

Recommended Posts

I'm fixing up a Dell Inspiron 537 Mini Tower for a friend. They want to upgrade the GFX card (AMD 4000 series) but I'm concerned the crappy HIPRO 300w will not take the load. Will this Dell take an off the shelf PSU like an Antec or Corsair?

Hi,

Dell was notorious for having a switched cabling in their PSUs, making seem it was an all normal but in the inside it was switched; so if you used a OEM PSU it just didn't work. Not sure if they still do this though.

Those kind of computers are pretty much vendor locked, so getting a new graphics card for it is always going to be hard. what you need to get is a low power consumer graphics card, but those typical aren't powerful enough.

The ones I have seen used a special cable for both USB and Power Switch.  I searched and several people appeared to have switched them just fine.  I haven't made changes in a Dell for years, but have before with no issues beside the aforementioned cable.

HP has a habit of making PSUs different sizes, so the holes don't line up correctly.  I've had to cut some metal or only use two screw holes, etc..
