malebolgia Veteran Posted December 15, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 15, 2003 I'm thinking of getting TechTool Pro 4 for my Mac friend for Christmas, would it be a good gift? She basically does a lot of video editing and Photoshop so I think it would be beneficial, but as a PC person I'm not really sure? If I'm going to be spending $100 bucks I want to make sure it's a good piece of software. :p Recently I've been hearing that TechTool Pro 4 isn't that good and I should go with either: Norton Systemworks 8 or Diskwarrior 3? Southern Patriot
What ever you do, avoid Symantec software on the Mac like the plague. It's well known for making things worse than they are in the first place. Personally, if she doesn't have one already, consider getting your friend a drawing tablet, or something along those lines. Most hard drive maintenance software like Diskwarrior is really not needed on the Mac anyway.
malebolgia Veteran Posted December 15, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted December 15, 2003 See keeps complaining how her computer is slow that's why I want to get her this. Plus it would give her peace of mind. How much do those drawing tablets cost?
sebaz
Yea tablets can be very useful gift. Wacom are the best, but hey are expensive altought i seem a tablet they have for 100 bucks. Also u can try giving her a bluetooth mouse/bluetooth dongle or maybe sum itune store certificates..just my opinion if u cant find a tablet that u like
malebolgia Veteran Posted December 15, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted December 15, 2003 So you think she would rather have a tablet than a software utility program. I mean how much can you really do with a tablet? Plus she has a wireless mouse so that's why I'm leaning towards software, and she isn't really big with music right now. isus
if her computer is slow, it's slow... no piece of software can really help that. maybe you should just get her an itms gift certificate. music is always good. and if you don't want to fund the riaa, buy her a license for Acquisition (www.xlife.org)

malebolgia Veteran Posted December 15, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted December 15, 2003 She has two Macs her main one is a dual 400 MHz running close to 1GB Ram; her second computer is the latest 17 inch Powerbook with all the features. As for music she wouldn't really benefit from an iTunes certificate. I was thinking of getting her an iSight but she wouldn't have anyone to talk to with it. She has all the editing software (Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Maya, etc?). So as you see I'm really in a hole when it comes to figuring out what to get her in time for Christmas. danbalsh
What about a years .mac subscription? that would be cool for sharing all her photoshop and video work with friends & family. I'd have to agree with everyone else, Disk Utilities are kinda a waste of money, I've got Disk Warier and have never used it.

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted December 15, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 15, 2003 What about a years .mac subscription? that would be cool for sharing all her photoshop and video work with friends & family. I second that. Beyond just the features of .Mac, there's also discounts on a variety of things that they snag every once in a while.
Keldyn
Does it need to be computer related? Sounds like she has pretty much everything she needs as it is. Why not get her something a little more thoughtful?
frod
well to answer your questions about tablets... "what can you do that you can't already?" nothing, but there is just something wrong about trying to draw something in photoshop with a mouse. tablets bridge the gap between traditional art media and the computer. i think if she's into graphic design stuff a lot then she'd love a tablet. Oh and I was looking at DiskWarrior and it seems that it will not run while started up under Mac OS X v. 10.3 (Panther). This is of course according to Diskwarrior's site click here.
