matt74441
I'm buying an XBox at the end of January and I plan on installing a mod-chip in it (for legal backups of course). I know quite a few people who own XBoxes and they've all had to return it at least once to get a replacement. Most of the time the ethernet adapter crapped out on them, the DVD drive broke for one, and the hard drive stopped working for another. They all had the version 1 XBox, so my question is; How common are these types of problems on the current version (whatever it is right now)? I'd really hate to go to the trouble of carefully soldering a modchip to the motherboard to have the ethernet adapter stop working, and be $250 in the hole. BroChaos Veteran Posted December 15, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 15, 2003 um, no one i know has had any problems. i think you'll be ok. and if you are decent with computers, you can fix most anything with spare parts off ebay or whatever. Danrarbc
You should be okay. Thompson DVD drives on launch boxes are notorious for problems, but as far as I know there aren't any flaws like that in the current version.

forster
If you pick up an Xbox premodded, you get a 1 year RTB warranty, probably your best bet if you are worried.

TheDreamX
You should be okay. Thompson DVD drives on launch boxes are notorious for problems, but as far as I know there aren't any flaws like that in the current version. Wrong. I and many others have had problems with Thompson drives. In attempts to get other models (aka Philips or Saumsung) people have bought new Xbox's. However, they still got Thompson drives. And moreso, THOSE drives crapped out too. If you are going to buy an Xbox, look online and check the pictures on how to identify different models of DVDs and try to get one without a Thompson. I have read that nearly 70% of Xbox's in production use defective (or soon to be defective, as they last for a little while) Thompson drives. I am one of the unlucky. Every day, my drive reads less and less and gives more and more errors. I have cleaned everything with air, used DVD cleaners, you name it. I'm currently bidding on Samsung drives on eBay, but I have not yet gotten one (they are all selling for over $100, but worth it if I can win one). Anyway, good luck. Rage
When I bought my XBox here in NB it came with a Samsung DVD drive in it. I couldn't be happier with it, I've never had any problems with it at all.
.KICK
What do you mean the Thompson drive issue was fixed KICK_XP? Thompson has fixed the issues it had with the lauch xboxs and now putting the better thompson drives in so basically every Xbox that you buy from today should be alright :)

LiGhTfast
nah these boxes can take a beating, there not much different than a pc inside and how often does hardware fail in your pc? most parts are swapable anyway, if dvd drive goes buy one of ebay or just use a normal pc dvd drive (wont be able to play orginal games) and hard drives you can get anywere
matt74441
I have had my share of defective parts, but they're all easy to replace. The one thing that concerns me is the ethernet adapter. I think the only reason that my friends XBoxes screwed up is because they moved them around a lot, and always unplugged the network cable before turning it off. matt74441
Having an XBox deflect a bullet is dangerous. Imagine that deflected bullet hit someone, or a real computer.

Dragon_Slayer
Brought my xbox at the beginning of this year and never had any problems with it. I have heard negative stuff bout the Thompson drives though, Samsung appear to be the best drives in the xbox.
