Networked data storage for home computers

Recommended Posts

I have two machines: MacBook Pro and custom Windows desktop.

Here's my ideal situation:

When I'm on a LAN or WAN, I have the same access to a mapped drive on either machine for the same exact data and files. If I go out, I should have the ability to sync specific files or directories to my laptop so I can access them anywhere.

When I'm away fro my LAN, the mapped drive should be able to use some kind of secure VPN to map the same files from a remote WAN. This way I don't necessarily lose the ability to access these files from anywhere I am as long as I have an internet connection.

Is there a device out there that can do something like this? I'd considered just mapping a folder from my MBP to my Windows desktop but that means leaving the desktop on all the time and drain a lot of power. I'm thinking a smaller networked storage device can be less of a power drain.

Am I living in a fantasy world?
