I suspect MSN used the same method AOL used to slam junk emails - banning all incoming mail from SMTP servers originate on a consumer ISP connection, AOL did that earlier this year and the effect was really impressive.

Yes it's a nice change to go into my hotmail account and not be greeted by 20 ways to improve my "growth" ;) ,

It's just a shame that my main ISP seems to have slacked off this problem  ,so any benefit gained from hotmail i'm now seeing in my inbox from my ISP.

hotmail has a nice spam filter.

i've been a member with hotmail forever and the spam feature wasn't there.

there are three settings: off, default and high (i think, but you get it)

it was never turned on by default for me because i've had the account for a long time but i think it is for new accounts.

how old are your accounts?

and maybe they turned if on by default for all accounts when they did the hotmail upgrade.
