ok so i spilled some water on my PowerBook last time and i finally sent it to Apple to see if it can be repaired. as some of you might know, i couldn't boot the machine without the power adapter plugged in.. i thought my battery died at first, but i just swapped the battery with my dad's pb, turned out the battery is fine, so something might be wrong with the logic board. i was told that it might cost me a few thousand bucks to replace the board (yes, the warranty has just expired). so if it costs a fortune to repair, i might as well just plug it in all the time and use it as a desktop, and get a new laptop for the road.

any suggestions guys?

i'm leaning towards the 15" PowerBook, coz i really can't think of any other better laptop out there.. but it isn't too much of a leap from what i got.. only the illuminated keyboard and 250MHz increase... oh and the DDR RAM and vid card..

i need your help guys..

Maybe wait for the next update to the PB and then buy that one. Should be early next year btw jan - march

It could be only the power circuit that needs to be fixed on the board, ask someone good at computers and soldering to help you out?

That's not even a rumor. "Rumor" is too generous for that. How about absurd, or perhaps rediculous. There have been no rumors about a dual G4 powerbook. Just some people here not thinking clearly.

No Dual G4 Powerbook, the next one will most likely by a G5 PB, or at least a speed bump on the current G4's in the PB.

Wait until after January 24th, you'll find out what new Apple products are being released and what upgrades will be available. Including software revisions (MS Office, MS Virtual PC 7, iWrite).

iWrite, this is the newest name that Apple recently patented & trademarked...speculation is a Word Processor, but no-one knows for certain what this product will be (listed under Hardware & Software).

lol  but there was a rumor about it at macrumors.com/appleinsider.com (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/11/20031117130322.shtml).. although i know it's not gonna happen but there's still hopes.. :)

how about G5 PowerBook?? not anytime soon as well yeh?

so what should i do?

:) The fact that it comes from appleinsider is enough proof for me that it won't happen.

Apparently its actually hardware - something like a tablet device?

OK, i lied (postcount +1) but you never know ... :p

iSight, iWrite...

If you go tablet don't go HP. I have sold all types and used them also. The only nice things that set it apart was that the keyboard could be detached and that it had a dock that allowed it to be used in both landscape and portrait (I think Fujitsu does this also). The chip they are using is incredibly slow. At first I thought it was the unit but all of them are like that.

I believe Toshiba makes one of the best tablets. It is a convertible model and comes in 2 screen sizes, 12 and 14. Fast, light weight and good battery life.

But....they are supposed to be revamping the Tablet OS in 2004, cannot remember which part of 2004....might want to hold off and see what new changes are in store.

...if I lost my iBook my choice would be a PB.

get a powerbook when they are updated... maybe their next update is a g5? ;)

That would be awesome! But, I don't think it's possible right now because of the overheating issues with the G5. Hopefully, Apple can solve that problem soon. That would be something that I would definitely buy!

There will be no dual G4 powerbook. As Supr said, it is plain absurd. Apple themselves has stated that they would like to put a g5 in a portable solution but it will take some time. They will be devoting all their time to finding a way to get a G5 in a laptop, not redoing the whole design of powerbooks to fit another processor. I could be sticking my foot in my mouth, but I would surely bet on it.

A tablet might be good, just for something different.

Have you thought about a 12 inch powerbook? If you just need it for the road and are going to use your ti for a desktop, you might as well get something very small and portable. It makes sense to get a 15 if you are not going to use your ti anymore, but if you are going to use your ti, it seems silly to have the same screen size notebook that is faster only used while you are on the road. You might as well use that one full time.

Get a Powerbook. Tablet PCs absolutley suck (if they were a good idea apple would be making them, but alas, Apple seems to be keeping well away), mainly due to the viewing angles of the TFTs on those things.

Also, I think Microsoft will discontinue Tablet PC if TPE 2004 flops like the first edition does.

if it's a logic board problem it will be around $600 to fix.

did you not buy applecare?

if everything is working besides the battery, maybe they won't have to replace the entire logic board to fix it and it might be cheaper.

either way it's going to be much cheaper than buying another powerbook.

i would think the powerbooks would be getting a processor upgrade in january. just a small speed bump to keep income happy. you might want to wait through january just to see.

yeah i didn't get AppleCare. :( *kicking myself* i'm still waiting reply from Apple.

btw, look at this thing! (http://www.vaio.net/models/notebooks/tr/index.html)

the only bad thing about it is that it's not running Panther. other than that, this baby really rocks!

Have you seen the new Sony 505 that is coming out in Japan? It is the world's thinnest and lightest notebook. Check here for a good picture and some specs. You can also google it to come up with a lot more information. It doesn't sound exactly like what you are looking for, but still cool nonetheless.

yeah seen it! the x505.. very very cool but not the thing i'm after, it doesn't have built-in wifi, the harddrive is too small, and the screen isn't wide. :D

ok i got a call from Apple today, RM6500 (about US$1800) to repair the board. no way in hell i'm gonna spend $1800 to repair it, so yeah, i'm just gonna use it as a desktop and get the Sony Clie TR2! :)
