Choosing a Linux distro

Recommended Posts

i use slackware for several reasons...

n1. slackware is the most "unix like" distro out there...

n2. the installation is simple... it looks hard for noobs because its text-based but its almost as simple as installing

mandrake

n3. i have less problems with slackware

n4. slackware is the oldest distro... old is cool !

n5. slackware sounds better than debian or gentoo :p

never mind n4 & n5

lol. I think I'll give it a go. Gonna be hard wanting to use it over Debian and Gentoo (I currently use both) but hey I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the info :)

Gentoo is the only distro that I'd ever think of using. I tried Mandrake and Redhat, both decent distros but I could never get acustomed to the dependancy problems that pop up whenever I installed a new program. The portage system removes that headache. Docs are available online, and the forums are the best. Go to a slack or debian forum and ask a noob question and see how many "RTFM'S" you'll be replied with. This rarely happens in a Gentoo forum, at the most you'll be told to do a search to see if the question was previously asked and if a solution was provided. Or they'll give you the url to a post that answers your question.
