Halo for OS X a lag God?

Recommended Posts

I've never played Halo: Mac but I know that Macs seem to suck for any big game like that :(

I found it easier to just get an XBox/PS2 etc.. and play games on that, more fun.

Has anyone been able to play Halo on the mac with all settings on high? see my specs below. i have to put everything on medium and turn off some crap for it to run smoothly on my rig and even then it lags a bit when there are a ton of baddies on screen. i've heard some people with g5's and radeon 9800's lag as well. this game is almost four years old and it lags my new powerbook thats wack. sure they updated the pixel shaders and added some fx but c'mon what gives. macs suck i want my pc back.

You want a Mac for games? - And a portable @ that...

Dude, buy an Xbox... Work fine for me..

Halo performance was crap on the PC too.

The game isn't 4 years old (it should have been - but that was before MS bought Bungie) IIRC it was originally in development for OS 9. The xBox version is really only a little over a year old and I hadn't seen head nor tail of the PC version until I played it at E3 ~6 months ago. It's still a new game on the home PC rack (and for os x it's days old).

Also read the requirements: You meat the recommended on everything save for the graphics chip. While feature compatible, the desktop GPU is infinitely more capable than the mobil one in your notebook.

IIRC the maximum draw you can pull over a PCI slot is 25w. Many AGP cards these day demand more than that - to the point that they now include places to plug in molex power-plugs to suppliment the power it can get from the motherboard. Your Powerbook has a 45w/hour battery, with a GPU that powerful you'd have <1 hour of battery life (kinda like some of the x86 notebooks people use).

What kind of frame rates are you getting and what are you specs like.

I kind of want to buy this game so I'll have something to play with my PC-using friends from time to time when we're idling between classes.

my lowly rev-c tibook might not be up to par i think.

Well you should worry about it. It's a unoptimized piece of garbage. It runs like crap on my Athlon 64 3200+, Radeon 9800 Pro 128. I just keeping praying that they will fix it up w/ patches

halo is good on xbox. just shell out 200 bucks and get one and play it online. plus it really takes allot of system resources just to play a lagging game, plus macs suck. I cant wait for halo 2 comming out next year and they lowered the price of halo by 20 bucks. go kick some flood ass.

Welcome to neowin. Thanks for flaming macs in the macintosh forum, it's been a few weeks and I was starting to fear all the ignorant wintel folks had finally grown up - thanks for putting me at ease sonyguy.

thx mac15

30 fps is reasonably playable for as often as I'd use it- if i could get 60 at low resolution I'd do it.

Time to go find a demo version...

Well then PCs must suck too because it runs like crap on pretty powerful PCs too.

Why don't you come up for air? Your brain needs some oxygen.

ignorant wintel folks? excuse me, you were the one that didnt really know what you were talking about with Halo, so excuse me for coming into "your" section of Neowin to tell you, you were wrong.

i think the main reason the windows and mac people fight is because, yes there are SOME ignorant windows people , but the mac people don't help when they pretty much say ALL of us are ignorant. it takes two to fight, not one.

*Proud PC owner*

Works for me and high settings. around 60-120 FPS :)

Does your screen refresh at 120 Hz or higher? If not, that is just a useless statistic. Anybody can write a program with a high FPS rating if it does not actually write each frame to the screen. :p I'm sure G5 Dual 2 Ghz owners with ATI 9800 Pro cards get high frame rates too but we are talking about a laptop here.

Is there really anyway to independently verify that it actually is displaying that many frames per second? Sorry to sound like a doubting thomas but after the ATI-Nvidia benchmark scandals, I take FPS claims with a grain of salt.

You couldn't just let that go, could you. For the record, it runs ok at 1280x960 with all settings at max, but I prefer 1152x864 for less frame rate drop during intense battles.

As for being a lag god, hell yes when talking about internet lag. I feel like I'm on a 56k half the time. This is with the demo though, so maybe they decrappified their net code later on.

Now that's just a great word, "decrappified" :D

There's a difference between "all the ignorant wintel folks" and "all wintel folks are ignorant". Trying rereading, then understanding what he said before you flame next time.

First off, I'm a Windows user, though hopefully not a "ignorant" Windows user. Anyway, I have the PC version of Halo, and as you, and just about everone else who has played any non-xbox version of the game have noticed, the performance pretty much sucks. Something must have been lost in the port from the xbox version because I have a 3.0 gig P4 with 1 gig of ram and a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, and even I can't play the game at a very high resolution. At least not without turning down some other graphical options. The sweet spot seems to be 1024X768 for me, but even at that resolution I get low framerates inside buildings. That's actually kind of ironic, since for most FPS games, it's the opposite. Anyway, I doubt any updates to the game are going to bring about any huge increases in speed, so I'd just play it at a resolution and with graphical options that marks a nice balance between speed and visuals. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

actually it runs great if i turn off pixel shaders and only leave on vertex shaders. the original didn;t even have pixel shaders did it? anyway maybe the pixel shaders will be more optimized with a patch or something.
