Invisible Computers

Recommended Posts

I have a small network in my house consisiting of 5 computers, two hubs, two printers, and a DSL modem. Everything is hooked up correctly, because every computer is able to connect to the Internet (the DSL modem is on one of the hubs' uplinks). The Workgroup has been set on each computer (the correct one of course) and every computer has an IP address (192.168.1.xxx). None of the computers can see each other on the network. Two computers are running Windows XP Pro, one is Home Edition, one is Win2k Pro, and the other is Windows 98 SE.

The problem just popped up three days ago, and I can't figure out what the problem could be. None of the computers have a virus (I've checked), they all have AV software on them as well as a firewall.

Tried all that. The computers won't even ping eachother, it keeps timing out. When I try to go "View workgroup computers" in My Network Places, it times out as well.

You need to share at least one thing on both PCs (folder, drive, etc). Windows will not set the 'visibility' of the computer to other computers unless you do so.

Do you have Norton Firewall install on them? It took me all day to figure it out why 4 computers in my home network can't see eachother, but can connect to the internet.

First of all is it a router or a hub you have? Cause if it is a hub, you should be able to get to the internet with your dsl modem. you say you can't ping anything... check your IP setting. Do an Ipconfig /all on your xp machine. Can you confirm that you do not have any anti-virus or firewall on any pc.

Ping is a basic connectivity tool, if you can get out to the internet you should be able to ping the other devices. All you need is a subnetmaslk and an IP. Are the PC in the same workgroup?

Have fun and get back to us
