No POST - System was working.

Recommended Posts

OK maybe someone can give me some ideas I haven't tried yet (I will list those below).

I have a SuperMicro X7SPA-HF mobo in a 1 U chassis running pfSense. Was browsing then started to get not connected errors. Checked my IP address and it was private. Tried renewing and nothing. Came into my office and notices the LAN LED on the port wasn't blinking. Plugged out the cables and checked but nothing so I full unplugged the system and plugged it in again and it does blink now.

However the system doesn't start at all. I don't mean pfSense, I mean the fan doesn't even start.

So for what I did so far...

- I reset the CMOS

- Pulled power and held the power button for 30 seconds.

- Removed RAM and all additional items.

The weird part is that the system is getting power as the LED on the mobo flashes like normal. Also the LAN NICs (2 NICs, one for WAN and one for LAN) both show activitily based on packets from WAN or LAN.

Only diagnostic info I have is when I press the power button the first time the internal speaker goes "Ping" and then nothing.

Any ideas?

Manual is here:

Ok well here's the rundown.

Seems it was simply the FAN in the unit.

Oddly enough this is a system in that doesn't need a FAN at all...  its designed to run with just the heatsink it comes with. I put a FAN in there just to cool it down a bit more in the summer time.

Apparently that FAN failed and it was protecting itself by shutting off.... either that or the PSU got too hot and just killed the power to the system as I don't see a SHUTDOWN option in the logs.

Checking some more but once I disconnected the FAN (and as a result of trying to fix stuff, it probably cooled down enough), it started right up.
