Updated: Samsung Series 7 HD Replacement

Recommended Posts

So my HD went bad and I installed a new one.  The BIOS still shows the old HD as being installed and the pc will start up, show the samsung screen, and reboot.  Stuck in a loop.  Not sure why the bios doesnt see the new HD.

ideas?

Ha!   Never mind,  I am dumb.  Looked closer at the model reported in the bois.  Said st1000lm014, old HD was a st1000lm024 but labeled Samsung,.  So must have been a rebadge Seagate.  Didnt notice the model difference.  Doh!

Seems to be fine.  And I guess now is a good time to upgrade to Win8 since I have to reinstall everything anyway.  Will make it easier to up to Win10 anyway.

Just for info: if you RMA a Samsung Spinpoint HDD, you'll get a refurbished Seagate Momentous back.

Not really sure what the hell is going on now.  PC wont restart, but shutting down is fine.   Try to restart, screen stays on and goes black.  Power charge light is on as well as the battery light.  Same things happens when I start the PC sometimes.

Also, sometimes when I start the PC, it will turn off and start back up automatically again.  Not sure if it is the hard drive since when the bad hard drive was in the system, it would boot/start just fine but had issues locking up in windows because of bad sectors.

When I am in Windows, PC runs fine and works great.  Not sure if it is an incompatability with the HD I bought but shouldnt.

Here is a video of what it does sometimes.  Not my vid, but same issue.  User said he reloaded Win8 and that fixed it.  MY system came With 7 and thats what I put back on.

is it an UEFI issue?

Dont think so.  I messed with those settings enabled/disabled.  Still fooling around with things tho.  Its a brand new HD and a hybrid when my old wasnt.  So thinking maybe a bios update.  Issue didnt happen with the old HD even tho it had bad sectors and was locking up windows.  Jiust the new drive.

Not, bios is the latest

Think I figured it out...

I removed the memory when I was replacing the hard drive and tried to replace the 4gb with an 8gb that was laying around.  Apparently that may have messed up some settings since I was just reading that when you replace the memory, there is a pinhole on the back of the laptop that needs to be pushed for the system to register the memory.  Its a temporary reset/battery disconnect since you cannot remove the battery easily and without having to remove several screws.  I was able to restart in windows a few times so far and I think I am good...hopefully.  Next couple days will tell.

Still having issues. UEFI is enabled so not sure what is going on.  Still having issues restarting or turning on from a shutdown.  Will fool around with it more tomorrow but if anyone has any ideas, let me know.  Laptop is working fine otherwise and everything is working.

Thanks

Appears to be something going on with the new HD.  I put the old one back in and everything is fine.  Boots and restarts consistently an no problems.  Maybe the laptop doesnt like the hybrid hard drive. I dont know.

Also, UEFI is disabled when I put the old 5400rpm HD in.  But I have to enable it in order to the latpop to boot the hybrid drive.  OTherwise, laptop will turn on for a sec, then off, then on....in a loop

Another update...

Went out and got a plain 1tb 5400 HD. Same things were happening. Original hard drive worked every single time.  So thought for a sec...

Ran diskpart and cleaned the 8gb express cache.   Put the hybrid drive back in and now it is turning on normally.  Going ahead and installing Windows on the system and hopefully that fixes the issue.  Cross your fingers.  If it does, then there must be something that was left behind in the express cache from the old HD.  But again, wont know if this worked for an hour or so.

Pray for me!!  haha

After clearing the express cache, all is well in the world.  Not even going to use the express cache anymore.  Really dont need it with the new hard drive.  System boots quick, quicker than before.
