Building my first PC

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of building my first PC and I would like some help or advice on the last pieces of the puzzle.

Currently the plan is to have:

(Already own)

Graphics Card: NVidia Geforce GTX 560 2GB
Sound Card: Sound Blaster 5.1 VX
RAM: Kinston 2GB 1333mhz x4

(Will purchase)
CPU: Intel Core i5 4460 4x 3.20GHz
Motherboard
Power Supply
Case
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5 inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive
HDD: WD 1TB 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive - Caviar Blue
WIFI

What would you recommend?

Thanks

Do you want to go ATX, mATX or smaller?

You likely will not need your sound card plus its PCI most new Motherboard don't have that slot any more.

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI or Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 for Motherboard
for a one card setup Coolermaster V650S 650W or Silent Pro M2 620W

As for a case you should really look for one you like but here is a basic one.
Cooler Master N300

When u do build it just make sure the back of the mobo doesn't touch the metal surface. Put the screws on first and then do your thing.

Power Supply get 520W if just one gpu or just buy big once so you don't have to buy another if u SLI. 750W.

Instead of Sound Card grab the z97mobo MSI. It has good sound drivers built in.

Case there's a nice one but expensive I think it's by Fractal design. Nice and tidy.

WiFi just grab a USB if your good with that or I mean go the built in way but USB should be okay (not recommended for gaming though)

Your HDD is fine.

Do I need to purchase a CPU cooler seperately?

Not necessary but if you're going to be gaming and you have the $$ go for it.

If it's a boxed retail Intel CPU, it will come with something that attaches to your CPU. It's a bit of an insult for the money you spend really as you're paying postage for its weight.

I've built tons of systems with virtually every make of motherboard available. I like Asus motherboards the most. They are well built, have great features, and allow great overclocking options. Although not made anymore, I built my system several years ago with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131726 making the system in my sig. This is the longest I've gone without needing to upgrade. I'd advise to get the best components you can afford so that you are future proofed. I also love Corsair components. I have a Corsair case, Corsair water cooling heat sink, and Corsair keyboard and mouse.

As for the SSD, I own several Samsung 840 Pro's so I'm not sure where the Evo stands in terms of performance.

Lastly, that video card seems old doesn't it?

No.

But while i can't speak for current Intel collers the one that came with my Core i5 750 was crap. Was kind of loud and did not cool my cpu much. I replaced it with an AC Freezer 13 (which is not that great but is toollerss installation) and my cpu is running something like 20 celsius colder while loaded.

I have a Corsair case, Corsair water cooling heat sink, and Corsair keyboard and mouse.

+1 for corsair case they are awesome.

I guess that compared to the high end cards available now it does seem old.

Realistically it's good for my needs.

The Gigabyte boards seem to have a good reputation online.

I suggest you build a machine that'll last you a couple of years (I try and aim for an initial 3), so don't be afraid to spec it a tad higher than you think you'll use. You'll appreciate it when the time comes, or of course when you discover new things to do and your "needs" change.

(I have a soft spot for the up and comers)

Thanks for all of the replies.

I am going to buy the CPU I originally said, the Gigabyte Gaming 3 board and a Fractal Case.

I found this as a PSU, any thoughts on this?

Building something that would last couple of years used to be a myth ;) but yeah now it's something that has become realistic "thanks" to consoles.

I bought my core i5 750 five and an half years ago. Had 4gb of ram and a radeon 5850. I replaced the stock cooler and overclocked it. I added 8 gb of ram. I changed the 5850 for a 670 and then a 970 and this PC is still holding itself. Will probably replace it next fall though cause USB 2, sata 2 and pci-e 2 are all starting to be outdated a lot. Still this PC lasted me 6 years so that's very good.

Considering how weak the new consoles are i'm sure a pc build right not with good parts (core i5, 970/r9 290, 16+gb of ram) will last many years to come with 1 or 2 gpu upgrade and cpu overclocking along the road.
