motion sickness

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this has been talked about or brought up at one point or another, but I was wondering what are some things that people do who get motion sickness playing first person shooters.

I just got done with a 2hr game of HL and the whole time I felt sick, but played anyways. Then I went and threw up in the bathroom. I've never actually gotten "sick" (thrown up) but I always get really dizzy. I've always had this problem even with Quake, UT, etc ...

So ... if you've got the same problem and have a solution or suggestions, can you please share?

Let errr rip!

damn, that sucks. so you actually threw up this time?

maybe take a motion sickness pill or wear one of those bracelets?

is your monitor refresh rate high enough? getting enough fps?

Yea I actually yacked ... and I feel better now. It takes a while for it to settle down; get less nausaus as time goes by. I'm getting plenty of FPS and my refresh is at 80Hz. So maybe it's refreshing TOO much and getting TOO many FPS??? I'm not sure about any of this because I have no idea.

But I'm sure that it's because everything moves so fast and that's why I get sick. I don't know why because I don't get car or sea sick ...

I have the exact same thing, only I stop before I get too sick. I've noticed 3 things that trigger my motion sickness.

1. It happens usually on old games like quake2, Half Life or single player medal of honor (multiplayer is fine).

2. It also happens when i'm in an enclosed area in the game (like in a house or cave but it doesn't seem to happen if there's constant action).

3. Enclosed area in a game plus being stuck or no action. (here's an example of what i mean: let's say in max payne 2 i can't open a door, i'll be going back on my steps trying to figure out what i missed and this seems to trigger my motion sickness)

Since I identified my triggers, I just don't play games that cause motion sickness. Simple as that! I have no other solution then to stop playing the game and move on to something else.

I hope others who experience this can comment as well.

Make sure you have the headnod (forgot name, it's option to simulate the movement of your head when you're walking/running), because I used get motion sickness when I played FPS games with this option turned.

Also, try taking a break every hour or so and look at something far away for about a minute or two, it'll decrease your chance of getting motion sickness (for me at least) and help you concentrate on your 1337 0wn4g3.

I get that way if the mouse isn't inverted. I like the "flight-stick" control. My friend's been giving me sh*t about it for 10 years like I'm defective or something .

I felt really sick when I played Doom and I still do, I've got my monitor at 75hz but I don't that's what's causing it... I don't feel sick at all when I play something like call of duty....

I think it is the 2.5 dimensional games that cause me to feel sick,

p.s. how can play with inverted mouse, I can't get the hang of it, too friggin frustrating ><

Wow, makes me feel better to hear other's experiencing the same thing. I got sick the other day I think only because I didn't feel well prior to beginning the game (foreign food at a holiday luncheon) but I played anyways :x Therefore, afterwards, it all came up.

But I'm really glad to see you all's inputs and suggestions. I'm gonna try the following. Since my monitor's already at 80Hz (which I don't think is the problem either) I'm gonna grab my wireless KB + mouse and sit further back. I think I'm sitting way too close to my monitor to begin with. I'm also going to try the headnod option; sounds like a reasonable way to reduce sickness.

Hope someone can invent a magic pill that can fix all this without doing all this crap but oh well.

P.S. My friends always give me hell about feeling sick too. They suggest that I play less intensive games such as Minesweeper and Hearts :D

Unreal 1 and UT 1 used to make me feel like crap. When I first got Unreal I played it all day, and spent the next 3 days feeling like I was hungover. Very not impressed, so didn't play again. Just unlucky I guess!

Motion sickness in a car / boat is easy to fix, but on a PC it's not quite the same! Boo.

None of the games bother me.

Exception: Postal 2, which BOTHERS ME FOR A DIFFERENT REASON!!!

Yeah, my buddy can't watch me pull, like, 8 G's in a flight simulator without being dizzy and leaving...

I have never really had a problem my self getting motion sickness while playing games. Though I do remember one time I was playing a 2D side scrolling game way back when and there was a lot of action in the background and it was moving by pretty fast, so I ended up having to stop because I started getting nauseated. Beyond that I have never had a problem, maybe I am just lucky? Sounds like this is a common problem..
