Low Profile GFX

Recommended Posts

I am looking for something a bit better to put in my Dell Optiplex 745. Something other than the default onboard video. It has to be low profile. As it is a smaller case. It does have a PCI-E port. Unsure what version, being it have a Pentium D, I would guess 1.0.

I'm not looking at gaming with this... P.O.S.

I just need something better.

There are low-profile GTX 750s and Radeon HD 7750s (or their rebranded R7 counterparts), for example. Anything that doesn't require a power supply connector should work.

Have a look for a second hand GT610 1GB or 2GB on ebay. I bought both of mine (one passive, one 40mm fan active) for less than

Yep. I would see if you can get the 2GB though. I found it handled 1080 better than the 520 1GB it replaced. The VGA port can be unplugged and removed if you don't need it.

Something like http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-MSI-NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-720-2GB-DDR3-VGA-DVI-HDMI-Low-Profile-pci-e-Video-/171462078824?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27ebefb168 or http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-ZOTAC-NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-720-ZONE-Edition-2GB-DDR3-VGA-DVI-HDMI-Low-Profile-/380978040892?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58b40f903c although a little pricier.

That's the type. The passive ones can occupy up to 3 slots though - check to see if you have enough room for that.

Active ones take up a single slot but the fans can make an annoying sound.

Here's what the active one looks like (with a 92p replacement fan):

My passive is 2GB and my active is 1GB, both handle media (Kodi @ 1080p h264) / streaming content the same. I've played FFVII, FFVIII, Metal Slug X and Pac-Man DX+ via Steam and they ran fine @ 1080p / 60hz.

Oh, yeah, I have a few of those here at home. Only thing is that I don't own any low profile ones.

I have nothing in my PCI slots. I should have ample room for a passive one.
