SirEvan
look at the girl you posted.. and then look at these: Now I don't want you to think I'm flaming you or your friend, but this is from my opinions and observations only. There are WAAY too many girls these days claiming to either be models, or trying to get into modeling. Modeling is not McDonalds. Not everyone is cut out to do it. You have to have a certain unique look, style, and attitude. 75% of the girls out there today claiming to be models or trying to get into modeling really need to get off their sky high clouds and come back down to the real world. The girls I just posted are intermediate-pro models, the last one doing stuff currently with playboy, and the first one will be on the cover of import tuner in january. Modeling is not an easy thing, and your friend does not have what it takes to get into modeling. Her face is not unique, and honestly she isn't really that attractive. She's cute, I'd shoot her, but she isn't model quality. She is good enough to do practice shoots on, but no modeling agency I know of or work with would ever take a girl like that. Your friend might get a few shoot offers, but she will never go anywhere, and will at most just be a test model...someone for photographers to practice shooting techniques or styles on. I'm not trying to be mean...just giving you an honest opinion from the industry side of things. Evan
CrimsonBlur
Hey, don't be so harsh guys. I have been on many photo shoots, and trust me, many models only look good in perfect lighting and a little touchup in Photoshop. There are many models that are selected because of their unique look instead of how "hot" they are, because photographers know they can make them look better with lighting, use of correct colors and digital manipulation. Many of the women you guys think are hot look like normal, everyday girls you wouldn't even give a second look walking by on the street. Don't believe me? Look at this picture of Britney Spears and Natalie Portman. Britney looks crap, I will never say she is hot ever again after seeing this picture. THIS is what she looks like without perfect lighting, perfect makeup and digital manipulation. After looking at this picture, none of you can say this girl poster here could never be a model, you are just plain wrong.
ze-newie
I'm not sure if I'm in a position to judge (I never feel like I'm in a position to judge other people's appearances) but if she wants to be a model she should be realistic. I'm sure she's a good looking girl in real life but some people just don't photograph well...the photographer who took those pictures didn't help either. The lighting is all wrong for her skin colour; the makeup is off; her poses are awkward. Even if that stuff were fixed, I don't know if she'd make it as a print model - you have to be naturally photogenic  Good luck to her anyway :)

SirEvan
The photographer who took those shots needs to be shot as well. I'm sure he tried his best, but just like i said there are too many girls trying to model, there are too many guys trying to claim to be photographers. Photography is all about art, and working with light. Photography is the art of light. To create a nice picture, you have to visualize how the light in your scene will play on the model. Those pictures above that I posted (the indoor ones) were all done after an hour of setup and prep time... and testing the shots to make sure contrast and lighting ratios were right on. Most guys see photography as a way to take pictures/see a girl naked/half naked, and most can get away with it, because girls who want to model are usually really really gullable. They have dreams of being the next Cindy Crawford (thanks to barbie, and fashion magazines/models) and will do almost anything to be a model, and will believe almost anyone, as long as that person says they can model.. they'll believe it. In the end, the girl gets screwed over (or worse, some girls have been killed) and the guys take ****ty pics, and get to see a girl naked. This has a double negitive effect... first of all, it alienates the model towards other legit photographers, and second of all, the ****ty pictures actually end up hurting the girl, because photographers and agencys will look at them, and see that the girl doesn't really look that good in pictures. Believe it or not, most photographers and agencys will not even contact a model if she has crappy pictures. I have seen girls posting pics on modeling sites that were taken with a webcam... and they claim to have experience. I and everyone else will just pass those girls by. Modeling is a serious thing, and there are both girls and guys that have no clue about it, and think they can either model or take pictures without having any experience whatsoever. I have been shooting for 4 years now, and I do not/never will claim to know everything about photography, because I learn something new every day. Every time I go out to a studio, or on location, I constantly discover new ways to do things. There is a famous saying among photographers. "Learn all the rules...and then break them" but the photographer who took those pics of your friend seriously needs to practice a lot more, and if I was your friend, and she is really REALLY serious about doing this, my advice to her would be to not post those pictures ANYWHERE. Get her a decent makeup artist, a decent hair stylist, and FOR GODS SAKE get her a decent wardrobe... and she has a much better chance of looking good in pictures. Photoshop is not really the answer either. What your friend needs is just a decent makeup artist who knows her stuff, and knows how to draw out the features, a decent hair stylist, and a wardrobe person who can pick out outfits. I do these 3 jobs myself pretty much. I purchase all outfits for the shoots I do, and I supervise the hair and makeup on all my shoots to make sure it accents the models beauty, and addds to her looks. Your friend would also need a decent photographer, who knows studio lighting and/or on location lighting. He should at least have a decent film or digital camera... if he has a sony or cheap canon/nikon point and shoot... tell her to walk away. If your friend shoots on location with the photographer, he should have at least one reflector/diffuser to help control lighting, as you can rarely get a great shot with just available light.. you almost always need a reflector/diffuser. I think thats it for now. Oh yes, one more thing to anyone else reading this. It ISIllegal for any agency to charge a model up front for any services.. so if an agency says that they need you to pay 400$ to start your portfolio or whatever... walk away, they are trying to scam you.. there are a few agencies, like Options modeling, Trans Contenental Talent (TCT), Whilemina Scouting Agency (actually TCT under a new name, and not associated with the Actual Whilemina Modeling Agency, which manages names like Cindy Crawford, Ellie Mcpherson, etc) and various other scam agencies. Watch out.. any legit agency that sees potential in anyone will develop you and market you first, and will only take percentages from your paying jobs after they start booking you jobs...NOT before. If you have any questions on photography, or modeling, please feel free to contact me, because right now this is pretty much my career, and I do know alot about the industry. SirEvan
Photography is all about the emotion or messages you convey through the model.. Especially true with portraits. not even a model, shes the sister of a friend of mine who asked me to shoot her so they'd have some pictures to give to friends and family. BTallack
I envy your photography skills SirEvan. I should talk to you about getting some tips. I love photography, but I've not really graduated from taking landscape shots. And I must agree with everyone here, the first girl is not model material. Sure, give me an hour in photoshop and I could fix her up... to a point. But standing alone she's not model material.

Feel free to pm me any time you have any questions, or you can always message me on aim, my sn is modelxposure I believe in the idea of open source information, so what I learn and know, I would be happy to pass on to anyone else who is interested in learning as well. Part of my secret though is my equipment. I shoot with Pro equipment, and use it as it should be used. I use a Sekonic light meter for almost every shot, as I want to be sure of the exposure I am getting, and when I shoot out doors on location, I use reflectors to modify the light to get a perfect image the first time... i rarely use photoshop. The only time I use photoshop on normal shoots, is for one or two small corrections, and then to profile for the web, or for printing (I normally profile to a lightjet 5000) The only time I spend alot of time in photoshop is when I print posters, or 8x10/8x12 images for the models, or for portfolio usage. Thats when I spend hours working on single images. It is always better to get a great image at the time you take the picture...not after the fact using software.
