KeeperOfThePizza
Hey guys, I bought a laptop quite a long time ago, I notice things are starting to get a little laggy now, I don't really use my laptop for much, Primarily Facebook, Music, YouTube(Struggles big time playing 720p/1080p quality).. It runs Windows 8 well and 10 Technical Preview. I bought this laptop a long time ago, upgraded the memory to 3GB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146555 Do you think it's time for me to invest in a new laptop? Jarrichvdv
Yes, I think you should upgrade. The new Dell XPS 13 (the one with 13" and very thin bezels). All I can say. Extremely well built, and it'll keep you going for several years. Strongly advised. KeeperOfThePizza 1 Share
darkrats
If that's all you use if for, then just do a complete system restore. Most laptops are set up to return them to their original configuration (usually by choosing that option during bootup), the way it was when you bought it. Alternately, you might find a restoration option in your Start Menu, or similar location. I'm still using computers I bought back in 2007, and the hardware still does what I want it to do. techbeck
Buy a SSD drive, reinstall Windows, and call it a day. The laptop only has 160gb drive anyway (unless you upgraded) and you can get a 128gb SSD drive cheap and will be much better and faster than the 5400rpm you have now. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148819 You don't do much with your laptop anyone and sounds like an SSD for $70 and a reinstall would suit you. raid0, DConnell and Elliot B. 3 Share
Jarrichvdv
How is upgrading just the hard drive going to solve his YouTube stutter problems etc? Guess what. It won't. The hardware is just massively outdated.
astropheed Veteran Posted February 5, 2015 Veteran Share Posted February 5, 2015 Your only issue is the GPU. Adding an SSD will improve overall performance by a very noticeable amount but it won't increase your laptops ability to play YouTube videos, unfortunately. By what you say you do I highly suggest buying a used (up to 4 year old) laptop as a new Laptop is just not justifiable for your use case. You will need at least 3GB of ram, an i3 or higher processor and I would very strongly recommend getting an SSD for it if it doesn't already have one. any iX processor will have sufficient video power to run YouTube videos in all their glory. Don't buy a new Dell, it's a waste of money. Unless your Computer habits change you'll be "future proofed" for years.

I might get slammed for saying this but have you considered chromebook? Its cheap can use youtube, facebook, music just fine and the device is fast and the battery last long(mostly 9-12 hours) Also it can run linux so you can technically run linux applications. you can keep your old device if you need to do something which you chromebook cant do. techbeck
How is upgrading just the hard drive going to solve his YouTube stutter problems etc? Guess what. It won't. The hardware is just massively outdated. I have laptops older than that that can do what he is trying to do with ease. Hell, I still have a netbook, 6+ years old, with a normal HD that plays youtube vids just fine.
Neowinuser1991
If your laptop is having issues playing youtube then yes upgrade. However for me the biggest difference I experienced is when I installed a SSD, like everyone else.
