I know it's slow but like everyone on 56K think they got a crippled cable modem or something! It's 56K and limited to 53K by the FCC so you're stuck at between 45K-53K connection speeds if you got V.90 or V.92 :) There's registry hacks that are supposed to work but i've never seen one that does. They just promise what you don't have... so you can't really increase speed. Just get DSL if you can and take all of that stress off your head.
