Did the ordered $79 HP Windows tablets arrive?

Recommended Posts

But at the same time less space. My WinBook has only 2.5gb free after installing all the windows update while the HP Stream 7 has 15gb free. While this isn't an issue for desktop apps as you can install them on an microSD card, you can't do the same for Modern apps without some tweaking.

The HP Stream 7 however's OS is compressed which I am sure makes it slower compared to the WinBook in performance. Also my understanding is the HP Stream 7 can't charge while it is being used.

I don't have a lot of interest in Windows 8.x devices but for this price it would be worth it to just play around with... Anyone know if there is any chance this will get offical Windows 10 support?

It likely will, but if for whatever reason it does not you can always install it yourself.

Hello,

I have both the Micro Center WinBook TW700 and HP Stream 7.  WB is slimmer, has more expansion options, but half the eMMC.  HP, on the other hand, seems less flimsy, but more limited in terms of expansion.

By the way, the Stream 7 does have a Micro SDXC slot built into it, but you have to take the rear panel off to get at it.  Here's how to do that, step-by-step:

  1. Turn the unit over so the back panel is facing up, with the bottom facing you (e.g., USB port is facing away from you).
  2. In the lower-left corner, you'll nice there's a thin slit between the chassis and the back panel.
  3. Stick your fingernail, an old credit card or something similar like that in there, and gently pry up around the edges until the back panel is detached.
  4. Micro SDXC card slot is located about a third the way up on the left, as I recall.

Supposedly, the limit is 32GB.  I stuck a 64GB card in.  No problems noted yet.

Regards,

So i've spent much of the morning using this tablet in the Windows 8 environment.

I must say, compared to Android, or iOS what a horrible tablet experience

1) There are no good apps. None of the ones I want that are available on other platforms.

2) The DPI scale-ling sucks.

3) Everytime i Open the keyboard it seems like it pushes my content up.

Maybe it's just me but as of this moment, I put a macbook pro on my lap to type this and OMG what a breath of fresh air. I hate tablets in general for a lot of things, but Windows 8 has been far the worst out of all the experiences.

When I picked up my nexus 7 my eyes let out a sigh of relief. Sooo much easier to see.

Just stick to windows app.

Yes, but the DPI scaling on the desktop is horrible, its so small and not very usable with desktop apps. To small of screen. You can DPI scale it but then all the menu's become deformed.

It's a tablet, it's desired interface is the modern environment, not the desktop.

Yeah I know it's a weak argument...

Yes, but even the modern environment isn't very good. it's soo small. Anyway to make it bigger? I mean the UI on IOS and Android is much bigger and is much less of an eye bleed.

It's likely just the screen.  The screens on these 7" wintabs is terrible.

No, the screen looks great. Everything is crisp. It's just the resolution is 800 by 1280 ... but I think the moderm UI should just upscale. I mean just look at the comparison photo above.

Umm, so it's not the screen but it's the screen?  You lost me.

I just wish there was an option in Windows to upscale the modern UI. The scaling on the desktop side didn't effect the Modern UI side.

Must be because you don't use tablets much. Windows 8.1 is far better in use than ios or android.

Sure there may be less apps, but h... do what... why do you use apps for on a tablet anyway... on phones apps make some sense, on a tablet 99% of your use is browser. Other use like photo editing has a million apps, and on a windows tab, PhotoShop CC(desktop) works great with it's new touch support.

The only other thing I would want apps for is comixology, which is there.

If you have a high enough res display you can change scaling under PC settings.

So you are saying people who use iPad or Android tablets don't use apps?

Far better how? The fact you can run regular windows apps? ...take that out of the equation, and I honestly don't see how they are better. As just a pure tablet experience how exactly are they better?

WIMBoot does have an overhead but on eMMC / SSD storage, it's not really a massive issue at all. Most (if not all) tablets with Windows 8.1 with Bing or Windows 8.1 Pro will be WIMBoot for the reset device options to work correctly.

No I'm saying that tablet use cases aren't app centric like a phone. the app most ios users use outside of safari would be Facebook and candy crush. and random other games they play for 5 minutes or less. it's a sofa browser device. and a gaming device for kids with mini tablets.

Any other app that's really used on a tablet can be replaced with a browser or exist.

far better in usability. the touch interface is far superior. even the charms, which MS is unfortunately throwing out with the bathwater. The way you quick switch apps, and always go back to the last app if you flip from the side and browse more apps if you quick flip. and the way ui uses slide gestures to go back and forward, while safari forces you to hit the tiny awkwardly placed button.

the os just is a lot smoother to use. the only app I might miss is my bank, but I sign on to the web version just fine, so that's mostly an issue on my phone, but they're waiting for testing to finish on their WP app now so then I have no complaints on the phone either.

So With Windows 8 you can fluidly switch through all the apps you don't use or aren't available on windows. I also looked for Candy crush on the app store and I didn't see it.

As far as closing a bunch of apps at one time, I think IOS and android are easier. Sure with Windows 8 you can swipe in from the left and swipe down to close each app., but with android just pull up a list of all the cards and swipe each one away, swipe swipe swipe swipe. MUCH easier than Windows 8.

With Windows 8 you don't need to close ANY apps though.  They literally don't matter the moment you go to another app.

Except desktop apps, but that's a different thing.

yes, that's true, I was going to mention that at the end of my post ,but I wanted to see if that was the very first next comment. But still, those who want to , android makes it easy. Windows 8 doesn't. Principle of the thing.

If I never close an app wouldn't there be potentially 50 apps listed on the side.
