Best screen recording software?

Question

I'm looking for something that'll allow me to record my desktop's screen, preferably with options for individual windows or a specific area. I see a lot of screen recording software on Neowin's software page, but I have no idea which works best.

Thanks in advance!

The only screen recording software I've used is by a company named Tech Smith and they have SnagIT which I think will do what you need (try the trial) or Camtasia which is a lot more feature rich which again has a trial and I'm pretty sure will do what you want but at more of a premium

Well, I don't really trust AMD with anything.

?And I'd like a free tool. I know of Bandicam and ZR Screen recorder or something, and I know there's a couple others.

+1 for Xsplit. fyi: the new version of Xsplit is a bit buggy, like very. The older version either 1.3 or 1.9 respectively is super stable and still feature complete. IMO and usage

I tried the latest version but it doesn't work with Win10. Does anyone know if any older versions work?

you're probably not going to find many that work with win10 atm due to compatibility issues w/ DirectX 12 & wddm 2.0

a few have different methods of recording but most make use of these

Windows 10 is not final yet..

You might want to wait a bit longer before the apps will come out for Windows 10.

If you need something right now, then you might go back to Windows 8 or older.

I don't NEED it, I just wanted it. I had ManyCam, but I don't think it's very memory efficient, and the framerate of its recordings suck. I'll just use Bandicam for now.

Depends on the use case, there is screen recording software specialised for gaming as example but there is also licecap which is able to record and save it as a gif image(very handy for posting on forums).
