Who thinks the new "macbook" is the.....

Recommended Posts

Yes, did I misspell or something?  I've NEVER, EVER once connected an SD card or a thumb drive to my laptop.  I've also never connected my laptop to an external monitor and all my backup data is in the cloud so I don't own an external hard drive.  And I can't remember last time I had to do something that involved a physical disk.  So in my case, I don't need the vast majority of unnecessary ports on most laptops and if I actually didn't like my netbook so much I'd be buying this Macbook.  PS;  I'm willing to be there's a lot of people like me out there...

So you are an average user that Apple is targeting.

Makes sense.

Oh indeed I agree Apple's pricing is insane, i've always said that (especially when it comes to ram / storage upgrades). I do think this will sell though to the young professional who has no real commitments and is probably already paying

Professional what?

There are plenty of better suited machines for people, even an MBP.

I see these are purely fashion statements for those that need no real computing power or ability for much of anything.

only very few need very high computing power. the rest just need a capable machine and most computers nowadays are. this renders that aspect indifferent to most people. so what do people buy? computers that they find attractive. for example a mba or now the new macbook. its that simple. life has become a fashion statement per se. at least in the countries and places where i move.

I just don't see these suited for any professional unless its lightweight office suite type work or internet checking.

The device remains in the superposition until observed.

Ahhh so the whole light particle duality thing ....  so... you're saying a USB is a quantum device ?  cool !

There are plenty of ultrabook laptops that are just as slim, have better battery life and a lot better specs for roughly the same price.

This apple laptop is well overpriced for what it is, people are paying for the brand and the OS / Apple ecosystem.

I disagree with the too poor, travel and fashion posts regarding apple because:

There are more expensive Windows based ultrabooks. (They are better value for money though as they have high-end specs instead of the budget specs of this new macbook)

As someone who travels a lot for work it does tick off the important boxes; lightweight, good battery life and enough storage to put some movies on the laptop for long flights.

But there are better Windows based systems for travelers, most that actually have a decent graphics card and you can even play games on long flights or on those boring nights when your away for work and don't know the language or anyone at the location you are visiting.

Fashion wise; Its a matter of personal preference. I personally think the Dell XPS Ultrabooks, Sony Vaio Flip and various others look better.

Unless Apple brings back the 17 inch mbp, I've already lost interest in macbooks in general

I'm not sure what you're so worked up about regarding your spelling? You've brought it up twice now while defending this overpriced, underfeatured device. It's like the lack of features is a positive thing going for it. It's like if I made a car with one door on it and said "well I never have passengers so there's no need for a door on that side" and expected that to be the end of the story.

There are cars with 1 door that are designed for a purpose which isn't your purpose... why do you care about what someone else needs?

I am not a Mac. I am a PC.

With that said I do know lots of Apple haters who are my PC brethren's. I do not get it. I know some whine about the lack of customization but I am not insecure about it which is what I am getting where this comes from? Actually 8.1 did take a lot of features away (another flamewar) and that is mac like in a way.

But for non pc lovers who just want something not loaded with malware and spyware like Lenovo that just work and are not cheap plastic Apple is it and a fashion statement too. Shrugs shoulders

one thing tho ppl: apple is no longer a true luxury brand since I know plenty of hick in the sticks that have MBPs and iphones.... the brand is now viewed as a "soccer mom" brand or a "n00b" brand and the it brands to have are samsung galaxy, MS surface, asus, sony, and lenovo for biz. rooted phones with custom themes are more high fashion then a "peasant" iphone is.

90% of the reason I use a macbook is because the touchpad (both hardware and the software/drivers in osx) kicks the crap out of any pc trackpad I've ever used, and the other 10% is the superior battery life.

Definitely not a fan of the single port on the new macbook though. I think it would be ok if the price was closer to that of a tablet, but at well over 1000 dollars its kind of ridiculous.

I had no problem buying my macbook air at 1000 dollars because of the great touchpad, better battery life than windows ultrabooks at the price range, and it had all the ports that I needed. This new macbook, while not necessarily being a bad product (the display, touchpad, and battery life look compelling), definitely stretches the price way higher than it should be for what it is.

I won't comment on the specs, but I do think that this thing is beautiful. The 1 port choice is stupid, we are still far away from cloud-only storage, many people still use usb sticks (like me) or external hdd's. But then again we are talking about an Apple product, it's clear that they want to make even more $ with their adapters.

It's the target audience: the road warriors that want OSX, have all their data in the cloud and just need a productivity laptop with great screen and battery life. If they want to connect their external HD or some other external device then they just use their MBP or MBA or even their PC, for example; this new macbook is mobility first.

IMHO the 1 port is stupid but i know people where this laptop would make total sense...

This laptop will move mountains in the education sector though. Teachers and students will LOVE it. It will heavily appeal to people who need a computer to work on but need to lug it around everywhere they go (i.e. weight and size is an issue). Lack of ports is of no consequence to these people as they either use the cloud or other online services to access their work/resources. I'm not a big fan of the new MacBook personally but I'm the type of person stuck in the past still using USB devices and whatnot, however, I'm not the target demographic for this device. Apple know what they are doing and this MacBook will sell very well. People will hate on it but that is to be expected.

Schools will use the Air or the cheaper Pros, most likely, if they're an Apple school.  You'd be surprised at how many kids and teachers still use flash drives.

Apple is still considered a producer of premium products regardless if some 'hick in the sticks' have them. OSX/IOS are considered more user friendly and this doesn't appeal just to "soccer mom's" and "n00bs".

With that being said there are Android products like the Vertu's which is a smartphone you get when you buy certain Bentley's (maybe other premium car manufacturers also) or costs over $10k USD for the cheapest models in their selection.

These and a few others are the phones people buy to show off that they are extremely wealthy, Not iphones.

With the laptops the most expensive Apple is the 15" Macbook Pro with Retina display which is $2,499. There is a 12" Dell that costs more ($3,099).

Apple is still a premium brand but its definitely not at the top of the premium brands list for smartphones or laptops.

Personally I haven't noticed a difference in the sensitivity of the touchpads, but can agree that when it came to battery life Macbooks did fair much better than Windows laptops at similar price point maybe a year or two ago but I think that's not the case anymore.

I don't think having everything stored in the Cloud would be good for road warriors; if they store large files (Hence to replace a external HD) in the cloud and need constant access to them than they would need large download caps on their mobile plans if they tether a internet connection that way. It would also take a lot longer to transfer files over from the cloud than it would just by having a external HD connected to the laptop.

An Air is still a better choice for those types

You're confusing what you think looks better with what is considered fashionable to the masses.   Right now, a mac is fashionable - if you have one - that is considered "cool"

I have always thought, if you have a mac you better be in grfx design or media design, otherwise - you have a mac because your arent smart enough to own a pc. (that is just my little way to poke fun at people who think they have to have a mac)

My Carbon X1 wouldnt get any ooohs and aahhhss - even thought it cost exact same as a MBP because its considered ugly.

Seriously? Do you just hate Apple products or what? What's ugly about this notebook? I'm dying to know.

You have to understand remixed will balk at anything that is considered trendy or appealing to what she refers to as "yuppies" (which she hates)
