guys, i have one question :blush:

when you light up menorah, do you leave the candle with which youlight up other candles burning or do you have to extinguish it :p

those who know anything about chanukah sould understand me :p

The one that stands highest is called the "shamash" it comes from the verb "Lehishtamesh" (in hebrew) which means "to use". You use that candle to light the others, ergo the name. You light one candle every night.

The first night you light the "shamash" and the first candle. (They are supposed to stay lit throughtout the eight days, however since the candle can't last eight days you just light it again the next day).

The second night you light the second candle (as well as the first because it probably burned out) using the shamsh.

And so on..... So no you do not extinguish any candle.

Here watch the pic, everytime a new candle is lit it represents a new day, note the "shamash" is always lit.

thanks mate! i always thought you have to extinguish shamash candle.

No problem. And the pic is not incorrect and neither are you.

The person lighting the candles is standing behind the menorah, you are just the spectator.

So the one that lights it is lighting it from right to left.
