dafin0
Maybe not the normal type of problem that is talked about here, but I have no idea where else to ask for help. I run a game server (Rust), when we hit a player count of above ~125 we start to get really high pings from the server to the router (see picture)http://i.imgur.com/H2UpSyP.png At lower populations our pings are for the most part under 1ms. Here is the server setup: Windows Server 2012R2 8GB RAM (at most 3.5GB in use) 120GB intel SSD i7 4790k Intel I350-T2 NIC (latest driver) Dxdiag: http://pastebin.com/Z073aVj0 Net speed test when not under load http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4229282620 The Rust server is capped at 100FPS, at this rate the CPU usage is at the very most 15% Sadly at this point I don
+BudMan MVC Posted March 28, 2015 MVC Share Posted March 28, 2015 Your speed test is not working. So what is the utilization of the network, and what is your speed? Ping times and loss are sign of saturated link and sure ping will get dropped first, etc.
sc302 Veteran Posted March 28, 2015 Veteran Share Posted March 28, 2015 Well if it were a high end cisco anything, I don't think it would be a router. Whole picture, server and network usage would be needed to determine cause. Could be the poor to the server is saturated, could be the network card can't handle the congestion. Could be your high end cisco is really a linksys that has huge hardware/firmware issues. Btw, high end cisco is an asa appliance. They start in the 500 range for a cheap one. I would probably have a 5512 in there at least (way over 1000)
sinetheo
How many channels, connections, and ports are set on the router? If the limit is 10 then it will multitasking them and put connections on hold as it round robbins them

Right now Windows resource manager is showing 0% network utilization but with that said its early morning here and only 20 people are on. here is a picture task manager from when we were getting hit with the high latency http://i.imgur.com/C3eJChG.png . sc302 Veteran Posted March 28, 2015 Veteran Share Posted March 28, 2015 Mrtg. Would be a start. Or cacti.
+BudMan MVC Posted March 29, 2015 MVC Share Posted March 29, 2015 So what are you suppose to get in connection speed.. If 100 that seems a bit low end.. Your at gig right? Or just 100mbps connection? So what else is on this router.. If you not using up your local connection, and just pinging your gateway shouldn't really be a problem unless that router is busing doing other things. If your server is under load (prime time I would think) then other boxes on that same network prob all busy as well? Here me pinging my local router while doing a speed test maxing out my internet connection both up and down.. But since that is really just a fraction of my lan speeds, should make for any issue. I saw 3 pings not under 1ms for the whole speed test up and down.
dafin0
LAN is gigabit and WAN is 100mbps The router isnt under much load with just basic web browser use most of the time. If i ping from another computer to the router the pings are normal and Internet bandwidth is normal as well. i found out a bit more about the network setup. it goes Router -> switch -> server in the next two days we will set it up to go Router -> server and try the onboard NICthe thought of that is to see if we notice any difference at all, and from there we can see if its the switch, NIC or driver. if it still plays up after doing all this then it would come down to a Windows setting and or the Router. +BudMan MVC Posted March 29, 2015 MVC Share Posted March 29, 2015 I wold bet large sum of money it has nothing to do with the switch.. You sure its just not your machine not processing the pings because its busy with the game? Are users complaining? doesn't look like your bandwidth is being touched from pic you sent under load. So what happens when you do say a speedtest and ping your router, like I did.. So you see issue then? So can you ping the router from a different machine? If the router is busy should show the same slower pings. Now you will see issue pinging outside lan out the pipe that is full.. So my internet is 50/10 I see normally 60/12 - so if I do that same ping but to my isp gateway.. See the pings go way up when I fill up my pipe.. dafin0
Im at work at the moment so ill just give you the details i know off the top of my head. Players do notice as soon as we hit this latency brick wall. Ill test out the pings while doing a speed test tonight
+John Teacake MVC Posted April 1, 2015 MVC Share Posted April 1, 2015 Maybe you want to send some of us, PM maybe the IP and we can test latency from our different networks.
+BudMan MVC Posted April 1, 2015 MVC Share Posted April 1, 2015 I have servers all over the US I can test latancy from, LV, Dallas, FL, Chicago, And then have one EU, luxembourg.. And can bring up more in other locations as well, Atlanta, NJ, etc.. etc. Send me the IP and can setup smokeping to monitor them.. So you see something like that - can give you the url you can check with. I could set those up from any one of my servers. So you could see any issues for difference in latency from different parts of the country. Eric 1 Share
