YouTube launches new Sports portal and expands its advertising tools

Sports fans that go to YouTube for their sports content have some news in store today. Google has announced a new Sports portal on YouTube, which aims to offer a more immersive experience dedicated entirely to this type of content.
Google claims the amount of sports content uploaded to YouTube in the U.S. grew by more than 40% in 2020, so a more convenient way to view it is a welcome change. The new portal will be the home to highlights from recent games, news, and videos trending in their region. You may also find content created by athletes, such as NFL wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. The new sports experience can be found on the desktop website here, or on the mobile app in the Explore tab. It's also coming to YouTube on smart TVs later on.
YouTube also has some news for advertisers, with the expansion of its connected TV lineup on YouTube Select, its dedicated platform for advertisers. This allows companies to get insights into popular content in different categories and help them buy ads that target specific categories of viewers, and this expansion is bringing that content outside of the U.S, to markets such as Australia, Canada, India, and Japan.
This expansion will take place over the course of 2021, with more countries to come, and it also includes sports content to go in line with the refreshed sports section.

Twitch relaunches sports channel and introduces dedicated Sports category

Earlier this year in March, video streaming platform Twitch decided to stream the English Premier League football matches. This was due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus which continues to disrupt the natural order of things to date. Today the Amazon-subsidiary relaunched this initiative in the form of a designated sports channel.
The sports channel is now live on Twitch and users can go through the guide to find sporting channels featuring professional athletes, football clubs and basketball leagues. Additionally, a standalone Sports category has been introduced in the Browse section on the live-streaming website. This will help users to better find, watch, and follow sporting content on the platform.
A virtual showcase planned for today has already kicked off and is currently airing. It will further detail the new sports channel and designated category. Several popular sporting figures, clubs and leagues such as Jimmy Conrad, the NBA, Arsenal, House of Highlights and the UFC are scheduled to appear on the live-stream.
Those who are interested in learning more can watch the ongoing live-stream celebrating the launch of Twitch Sports on the relaunched channel at /twitchsports. Users may also lookup related content in the brand new Sports section on Twitch.

AWS and Formula 1 announce six new racing performance stats

Image via Formula 1 With less than two weeks to go for the resumption of the 2020 season, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Formula 1 have announced six new performance statistics that will help fans analyze the flood of real-time data during races. This will help them gauge the performance of the cars on track and predict race outcomes. These statistics will use a variety of AWS offerings, including Amazon Kinesis, AWS Lambda, and Amazon SageMaker.
To start off, on July 3-5, at the RedBull Ring in Austria, the debutant 'Car Performance Scores' will display an individual car’s performance using four metrics: Low-Speed Cornering, High-Speed Cornering, Straight Line, and Car Handling. These are vital indicators of a car's race performance and will allow fans to compare different F1 cars on the track.
The Car Performance Score stats are in addition to the five other metrics that will debut this season. Complete details on those are as follows:
Vis-à-vis the initiative, Rob Smedley, the Chief Engineer of Formula 1, stated that “We’re excited to be expanding this successful relationship to bring even more insights to life, allowing fans to go deeper into the many ways that drivers and racing teams work together to affect success.” While Mike Clayville, Vice President of Worldwide Commercial Sales at AWS remarked that “This year, we’re thrilled to extend the power of F1 data in the cloud and unlock new insights that help fans understand more of F1’s rich complexity.”

It has been 17 years since the debut of the original Xbox in the United States

It was 17 years ago this day that Microsoft launched its first ever video game console in the United States. The Xbox would arrive in a time when Sony's PlayStation 2 was dominating the market having arrived a year earlier and video game veteran Sega was bowing out of the console wars, discounting its remaining stock of Saturn consoles.
If that wasn't enough, Nintendo was also preparing the release of its Nintendo 64 follow-up, the GameCube. To say the very least, it was a highly competitive market that pitted newcomer Microsoft against some powerful industry veterans. While the console wouldn't be a huge hit, it did spawn some notable services like Xbox Live, which has since evolved and is still a huge part of the experience today.
Although the original Xbox is now a relic, forgotten by most or sitting on a shelf for nostalgic appeal, its impacts within the gaming industry are still evident with current generation consoles, and also through products like Hyperkin's homage to the Duke controller.

Hyperkin shows off neon variants of the Xbox Duke controller with OLED display

It was a year ago that Hyperkin debuted its homage to the original Xbox Duke controller. The controller was large like the original but also featured nice upgrades like an OLED display and breakaway cord. At this year's E3, Hyperkin is drawing from the well once again, unveiling a new set of Duke controllers, but in bright neon colors.
As you can see from the images and the video, the new controller comes in four different colors. While the colors are certainly bright they aren't made with a matte finish and are instead made from a translucent plastic. The updated controllers will feature the same OLED display as the one that debuted last year and also will have the same the breakaway cord as well.
Hyperkin has not announced when these units will be available but you can probably be certain that like the previous release from the company, these will be made in limited quantities.
