iMac 2004

Recommended Posts

Neowin isn't exactly known for discussing rumors.

But.....I seriously doubt Apple would create a whole new iMac (20"), then two months later scrap it and make a new form factor. We may see some iMac speed bumps, but nothing more. Same goes with the PowerMac. The only thing I really expect to see get an overhaul are the lcd displays. They've been around for quite awhile.

I think the changes that article were talking about are actual inside changes to the iMac, I doubt we will see any major changes to the iMac until atleast Summer 2004.

I have read other articles, that mentioned a new compact Aluminium brushed case.

Probably be rumours but they have been picked up by several big UK mac magazines :-/

Well, I think no one's mentioned it because it's a complete rumor. I'm more excited about new PowerMacs :D

I second that :D I would also like to see where they're going to go with the PowerBooks

I read about this somewhere else, and it's the inside casing that's going to have a change of material, not the outside. The cover will still be the same, but they are going to use a new material for the inner casing because of price advantages.

Just as roadwarrior says, this has already been discussed soooo many times here on neowin. We all had a discussion about the interior of the iMac aswell - we all concluded that since the 20" has just come out that it would be unlikely they would change the entire design (but we never know ;)).

Also, that Aluminium is referring to the interior of the iMac - it'll be cheaper to produce than the current macs.

P.S.

Just so you know, the other BIG rumour is that a 30" LCD will also be unveiled with a 'possible' G5 theme to the look 'n' feel of it. This is all unconfirmed until January. Fingers Crossed :)

I strongly doubt Apple would do this....The 20" iMacs are already the best.

Maybe a 1.5ghz iMac, not a new design.

I am sure Apple is redesigning the iMac and I'll tell you how:

I know someone inside ... he explained the current iMac's swivle screen silver neck has gone up in price significantly and they were in developmental stages of an entirely new design (mainly to cut costs).

This was more than 5 months ago when I was told. Perfect timing to complete a design. I have posted this information on other forums but it didn't get any recognition.

This is first hand information.

Rrriiiiight. I think most Mac users know better than to believe that.

i don't know what they will replace it with or the way the new shell will look. But I can give the proof of why Apple is redesigning the iMac from an economic perspective, and about a relative time of when development started.

Might not be the info you wanted, but for those who think the iMac is not going to change soon, they are wrong.

Sadly, I was saying this 5 months ago too, but no one listened. Of course I don't mind, its not a big deal ;)

pshhh any product that starts with an 'i' is not designed from an economic perspectave.... they are designed for a 'ghee, let's take some incompatible comp. parts, shove them in a white plastic case that contains no 90 degree angles (wouldn't want those POWER USERS to hurt themselves now!) and offer them a whole line of products that will look soooo much more interesting in 15 years when all that thick white plastic turns YELLOW!!!!!!

1. Incompatible? I'm fairly sure that's not the word you intended to use, unless you are an idiot.

2. If I'm still using an iMac 15 years after I bought it, I'll be too impressed with it's longevity to give a damn what color it is.

3. Curves are sexay.

So does it work with my windows software? My linux software? My UNIX software? My DOS software? My open-BSD software?

On most Macs, exception of powerpc, can I plug in my Radeon 9700 AIW Pro?

Even if I COULD, could I use all of it's features?

Can I plug in my Serial ATA hard disk?

Can I switch out the CPU for something A LITTLE MORE POWERFUL??

Does Apple offer a 64-bit computer?

Could I plug in my pocket pc? and transfer MOVIES like the matrix reloaded to it? (Still transfering just mp3s to the ol' IPOD, eh?)

 Time to upgrade, dude....

3. Curves are sexay.

Point conceded.

Yes - VitualPC. Does your Wintel box work with my OS X software?

My Linux software

Yes, without ever leaving OS X. "Fink install KDE" in a terminal window. Fink.sourceforge.net for more info.

My Unix software

If it's been ported to Linux. I doubt you are using any true Unix software on your Wintel box.

My DOS software

Get real. Also, yes.

My Open-BSD software

I think you should look into just what OS X is. Darwin ring any bells?

On most Macs, exception of powerpc, can I plug in my Radeon 9700 AIW Pro?

All new Macs are PowerPC-based.

Can I plug in my Serial ATA hard disk?

Yes

Can I switch out the CPU for something A LITTLE MORE POWERFUL?

Yes

Does Apple offer a 64-bit computer?

Do you live under a rock? Ever heard of the PowerMac G5?

Could I plug in my pocket pc? and transfer MOVIES like the matrix reloaded to it

Yes and Yes

Still transfering just mp3s to the ol' IPOD, eh?

Well, that is what it's for

Also, you completely missed the point of #2

What beige PC from 15 years ago hasn't had any type of discoloration?

Incompatible parts? Um, what does Apple use that isn't a industry standard? All you have to do is get companies to release drivers and it'll be compatible. Apple uses ATA and SerialATA for hard drives (you can use any kind off the shelf), ATAPI for optical drives, we have USB and FireWire, they use 802.11b/g for networking, AGP for graphics cards, I mean... what's incompatible? If you mean on the drivers perspective, get companies to release drivers and they'll be compatible.

So does it work with my windows software? My linux software? My UNIX software? My DOS software? My open-BSD software?

VirtualPC for Windows and DOS software, and possibly X11 for your Linux, UNIX, and OpenBSD software.

Can I switch out the CPU for something A LITTLE MORE POWERFUL??

Like I said, yes you can... and for the CPU, there are a lot of CPU Upgrades for Macs. Just go search for G3 or G4 Upgrades.
Does Apple offer a 64-bit computer?

Did you even look at the G5?

Could I plug in my pocket pc? and transfer MOVIES like the matrix reloaded to it? (Still transfering just mp3s to the ol' IPOD, eh?)

There are utilities to sync data to PocketPC computers, along with Palms too...

And if I was using a computer after 15 years, I'd be more than amazed at it's longevity than the color of the case.

wow, gotta start paying attention to apple!

and, no, I don't have a wintel box.

Liiinnuuuxxx...

But IS THERE ANY SUPER COMPUTER IN THE WORLD THATS A MAC?!?!?!

nooooooooo

How many servers are on Macs? Not many. The apple.com site is probably not run on macs. (however, until recently, microsoft.com was running linux, so, whatever....)

It's not cost effective.

Which of our computers, realistically, is better?

My 3 Ghz of P4? My nice video card?

Which I probably paid less for???

btw, thank you for schooling me on the ways of the mac. I have not been owned in a long time.

I'm sorry for being so wrong....

but really, is their ANY WAY that Mac hardware is superior????

You mean besides reliabilty, build quality, and downright sexiness?

Here's a test. Go to CompUSA and pick up a Toshiba or HP notebook. Hold it by one corner. Then go pick up a $900 iBook. You'll see.

If you're really into Linux, you really should check out Apple. OS X is beautiful and easy to use and you can run all the Linux apps you want from right inside it.
