iMac 2004

wow, gotta start paying attention to apple!

and, no, I don't have a wintel box.

Liiinnuuuxxx...

But IS THERE ANY SUPER COMPUTER IN THE WORLD THATS A MAC?!?!?!

nooooooooo

How many servers are on Macs? Not many.  The apple.com site is probably not run on macs.  (however, until recently, microsoft.com was running linux, so, whatever....)

It's not cost effective.

Which of our computers, realistically, is better?

My 3 Ghz of P4? My nice video card?

Which I probably paid less for???

btw, thank you for schooling me on the ways of the mac.  I have not been owned in a long time.

I'm sorry for being so wrong....

Yep, Vigina Tech G5 Super Comp, in the top 500 list... 3rd i think

Apple is run on apple servers, and acctually there are quite a bit to apple servers...

ok, compair what comes in an apple compaired to a dell lets say, 9 times out of ten, for MORE STUFF in the apple for less, apple simply doesn't have budget comps,

i think there are like 1 mac programs that are actually useful. overall, macs dont really do anything except surf the web.

I'm pretty sure you're just trolling, but I'll bite

You can install thousands of open source apps through Fink. iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, mail.app.

If I'm really into TRUE linux, as in the group of people that would never touch software that didn't release source code, and need to own and make *caugh* heavy modifications to everything they own,

I wouldn't

A. step foot into CompUSA. EVER. EVER. NO. YOU CANT MAKE ME!!!!

B. Get a MAC.

BTW, read: first and pretty much ONLY supercomputer of macness.

Yes, I can run linux apps in OS X.. I now know that. Funny thing is, I can run Linux apps in linux too. For free.

And OS X IS beautiful. If I ever had to marry an OS based on looks, stability, and features alone, I would be married in Vegas before the sun got down.

PS: Mac servers...

2,800 dollars.

1.33GHz PowerPC G4(2MB L3 cache)

256MB DDR333 SDRAM

60GB ATA/133 ADM

Mac OS X Server (Unlimited client)

Dual Gigabit Ethernet

CD-ROM slot load drive

ATI Graphics Card with VGA

So they give you 60 GB of slow ATA/133 storage, an INSANE 1.33 Ghz, and a whopping 256 MB of DDR333

and a graphics card with... whoah.... VGA output..... and dual gigabit ethernet,,,,, WHOAH..... for such a cheap price!

Dude, you could home brew that for MUCH LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE.

EDIT: We should have someone sticky this,... this is an excellent PC vs. Mac arguement that the community could benefit from, and definitely argue more for BOTH sides....

Why do you need anything more than VGA output on a server? You gonna game on your server?

If you're running a production server for a legitimate company on a homebrew box, you really should stop.

Price a similarly equipped Dell server that's also 1U in size and see how close the price is.

If you need more than "60 GB of slow ATA/133 storage", check out XServe RAID.

<edit>The problem with stickying a thread like this is that the 'd00d Apple suxxors!!!1 AMD roxors my boxors LOLOLOL!!! idiots would hit it</edit>

ARGHHH DELL????

Dell does not equal homebrew.

Dell = MUCH WORSE THAN APPLE THANK YOU VERY MUCH

And I run an ftp for myself and a small html server for my friend on one comp.

And when I'm home, I run game servers.

They're never down, 'cept I lose power a lot

I could get a UPS.... but nahhhh, im cheap....

And you can't game on MAC. I mean yes, you can, but not anything recent. It's not even the mac users fault, just no one makes games for mac with release dates within the same YEAR as the REAL games.... take BF1942, UT2003, UT2:XMP, DoC, etc etc....

Macs are probably better for graphics editing, yeah, with those nice screens :)

And there are a few(er) 3d rendering apps for mac, though even ILM has a mac-group, but they did, like, very little..

PS: You don't need more than VGA on a server... was IWT ... inebriated while typing...

If you game, Linux is obviously not the best OS to be running considering the fact that there aren't many new games released for Linux.

Apple has it's place, PC's have their place. 'Nuff said. For now, however, I'm sticking with my dual boot XP/Linux setup. I get enough Mac use at school... (Oh, my school bought like, 30 of the NEW iMacs last year... oh the joy...)

You could very well pull the WINE card, but I doubt performance is up to par with it's native environment.

<----- has dual boot, linux primary, XP pro for gaming and Lightwave 3d....

STOP COMPARING IT TO DELL.... WE ALL KNOW DELL STINKS!!!!

(Great, now instead of just having posts for PC vs MAC, Linux VS. OS X, we'll have APPLE vs. DELL which ISNT EVEN A COMPETITION!!!! APPLE WOULD WIN!!!)

i was scouring the net for ammunition vs. macs.....

found this, funny as ******

I recently ordered a Dell Inspiron or something, I like it, but it crashed, and I had to call the company to come fix it, I heard about the PowerBook, I bought the 17-inch book, wow! My eyes lit up, it was awesome. I opened it, and started playing around, I LOVE IT. I told the Dell people to keep the laptop, I LOVE APPLE. It is so fast!

I almost hurt myself laughing.

Dell has some decent hardware, you can't deny that. And they sell really, really cheap computers, which you also can't deny.

Dell is for the average Joe that knows nothing about hardware. They just want a computer. And hey, why not get a cheaply priced computer while they're at it? It's a deal that 80% of America can't resist.

I wouldn't trust my company's data on a homebrew server. Not at all. That's another reason why we run Mac OS X Server, because it's by far the most stable OS we've used there. I work to fix all the computers along with my web design job and only once have I had a problem with a Mac, I constantly have problems with the PC's. If our server had as much downtime as our regular PC's, I'd hate to see all the extra complaints I'd have.

But that's not the point...

If you're saying that, then Battlefield 1942 came out... really late past 1942! Unreal Tournament came out in 2003, and there are tons of games on the Mac. http://www.apple.com/games/

What would a screen have anything to do with it. Not every Mac user has a Apple Cinema Display. And there are quite a few great 3D rendering apps for the Mac, including Shake, which is an amazing tool. Guess who makes it, Apple.

AHHAHA!!

Finnally thought of something....

Mac OS hasn't gone to the moon, and doesn't plan on going to the moon anytime soon. It hasn't made it into orbit.

On the ISS, I distinctly remember IBM laptops, and a linux plant processor. (Ok, defintily a bad use for linux...)

But, there's the Beagle2 that's nearly to mars, and its running linux in its home base and on board.

Many sattelites run highly customized versions of linux.

I had forgotten all about that :p

A Dell computer is fine for that 80% that only check their e-mail and download illegal files from Kazaa.

I pity your existence and lack of knowledge of the general computer user.

Dont care about the general comp user.

linux has more comps running it than OS X, i believe (now)

Does anyone run an apple comp with mutliple screens?

Do they even SUPPORT multiple screens?

Even Win NT supports 12 monitors or so.

MACs very rarely have non-monitor outputs.

Do macs OFTEN have 5.1 surround?

Why did mac turn of Hyperthreading when the compared their processors to intels?

OK, that has to be the most rediculous anti-mac argument I've ever heard. Macs aren't any good because the Beagle2 runs Linux?!

As to sattelites running Linux, Linux is great for embedded use. It's also in a lot of set-top boxes, toasters, wristwatches, and anywhere else you can run an embedded OS. OS X is a desktop OS.

K, point taken....

Wait, NOT THE MOST ridiculous anti-mac argument. HERE it is..... You're zest for the mac caused you to type with such fire and drive, you couldn't even spell ridiculous. :p

now THAT was the lamest arguement ever!

Count your blessings.

I have a hard time believing you are an expert, the Omega, the Alpha, or the God (goddess?) of the Linux operating system when you cannot even conjugate a complete, legible sentence. I have respect for you, however, that you defend Linux and use it on a daily basis. I still see you in the wrong, though. Linux is not for the average computer user. Maybe it is for you, but that's beside the point. Dell is a well established company that has made a fortune pumping out what the public wants. They want low budget computers that work. Nothing more. They could care less about what chipset they are running, or the FSB of their video card. Infact, I'd make the assumption that 7/8 of the public doesn't even know what a video card is. That figure is pretty forgiving, too.

On the Apple issue, they make computers. The company is out to make money, and nothing else. Apple, however, has a higher grade product (supposedly), and the price reflects that.

Concerning home-brewed servers: A professional, high-caliber company will not run on a home-brewed server. Plain and simple.

Operating systems: Windows is winning, that doesn't mean it's the best by any means.

That's all for now. I also might point out: Arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still a retard.

And yes, that makes me a retard, I suppose.

PS: ITRON never made it to anything bigger than a cellphone :p

PPS: Can't type a legible sentence. oh wait, darn, just did....

Anyway, can type a legible statment in C++, java, PERL, HTML, XML, BASIC, the list goes on.
